Why did they say Vancian magic would be gone?

So now the worst aspects of vancian spellcasting have contaminated every class and are pretty much hardwired into the game but hey, wizards don't have to use crossbows anymore !

Why did they say Vancian magic would be gone? It most clearly is not.

They said the old spell system was gone (which it is). A lot of fans referred to that spell system as "Vancian magic". I don't recall anyone from WotC saying "Vancian magic is gone" or it coming up in any context other than "the old spell system is gone".
