Kobold Ecologies

The half giant, the retriever, and the revenant material have never been seen before!

Now, with them all in one place, you can really flesh out that epic fight you were dying to run. You know, the one where the derro lich summons the retriever to find his phylactery, because he forgot where he hid it, while his cloaker minions attack his barghest business rival's underground half-giant mithril mining operation but learns too late that, thanks to a homunculus spy, a revenant maenad on his centaur steed along with his silent golem companion--all three have vendettas against the lich, you see--knew exactly when to attack; the PCs will find out later that it was the phantom fungus collective that was pulling the strings all along to further its own horrific plans.

No no, obviously the derro is the best, it's on the cover!

Or possibly the centaur and maenad, since they are 4E. Hm, so many choices.

I'm curious to hear what monsters people would like to see in Volume 2. Anyone?

To be honest, any ecology articles by Jonathan M. Richards would get me buying Volume 2. I loved his ecology articles and his Monster Hunters. Any chance of getting him to give them a return?

To Wolfgang or any other: I'd buy a book of the Monster Hunter ecologies (though I preferred the less silly versions).
As a HUGE fan of the old Monster Hunter Ecologies, I'd be interested at trying my hand at something similar - yet, of course, distinctly my own.

What do you think, Wolfgang?

Retriever is written by the most people, which makes it way more than twice as awesome as all other things. You wouldn't breed a child from just one parent - why should an ecology deserve any less? Retriever is the strongest there is.

It's like Satan's Roomba, and your party is the dirt.

I do love the way that the Ecology of the Phantom Fungus reinvents a deeply silly monster as a much more interesting, Cthulhoid/Far Realms beast.

QFT. That article, more than any other, demonstrates what a good ecology article is supposed to do - it presents the monster in such a way that it goes from being just some weird thing to kill, to being a creature brimming with narrative potential that enriches your game.

Making the phantom fungus part of a Lovecraftian "fungal collective," with the mi-go at/near the top, was enough to make me sit up and take notice. To me, it's the best ecology in the book by far (though the retriever was a close second - finally an answer for how those things can cross planar boundaries in the first place!).

haha this thread (if you take out ENW staff!) has the least total of post counts I have ever seen.... welcome to ENWorld you guys :)

Umming and aaahhing about this, I discovered KQ at issue 7 so have the centaur, golem and maenid. But I love ecologies of, best bits of the old Dragon mag IMO. Convince me to spend approx 20 bucks NZ...

Treat it as a skill challenge

The half giant, the retriever, and the revenant material have never been seen before!
..but will I see them in my next three KQ mags?
