PH3 predictions?

So what should I expect for this next PHB 3?

What we know:
1) Hybrid classes: I'm looking forward to seeing this on DDI.
2) Wilden: apparently based on the Killoren. I'm a bit underwhelmed at the backstory, but they'll likely be ok.

What we want:
* Psionics: I'd like to see this get brought back. Not least because it was so prominent in Eberron, Dark Sun, etc. Just handy, and a new take on it wouldn't be too bad.

* Assassin: classic class from 1e. While it can be done with a rogue, just like 3e, they might as well go for it.

* Necromancer option for wizards

* Racial classes for more powerful critters, like Dragons or Illithids; or for that last one, some sort of racial version so they can take Psion levels.

What we expect:
* Monks and other KI source pcs.
* a new power source, possibly Psionics, Ki, or Shadow.

As we're getting a PHB3 Monk Playtest in 5 days, you can probably move this up a notch to "What we know."

People will grow tired of shelling $ for stuff that should have been in the 1st PHB?

I knew I forgot to do something the last time I read one of your posts...

Hmm, interesting question. We knew what was going to be in the PHB II for the most part for a long while, but the PHB III is much more of a mystery. Since the four power sources we have are pretty much done (assumedly) we first have no clue what power sources (or even how many) show up in PHB III. Second, with the hybrid classing preview, it seems likely we'll be getting some new rules pieces, something PHB II lacked. Then, of course, is the question of races, both what and how many as well.

Out of the power sources hinted at in PHB I, I think Psionic is the most likely in PHB II. Eberron incorporates it pretty thouroughly, as does Dark Sun, often suspected of being the 2010 setting. Plus, its simply a very popular option with an already existing fanbase.

Out of the remaining three sources, we have Ki, Shadow, and Elemental. I generally push Elemental out of the running, possibly because it is the least understood of the sources, leaving Psi, Ki, and Shadow as the sources in PHB III.

With Monk confirmed already, Ki seems to be pretty much a lock (we'll know for sure come Monday). We've already seen some Shadow powers in PPs from various sources, and it could give us an Assassin class (hinted at strongly in a Dragon article a few months back).

My prediction is that we'll have 8 new classes, representing 2 power sources. This will clear the way for two "Source Power" books in the following months.

I don't predict we'll see too many new Arcane, Divine, Martial, or Primal classes any time soon, except in setting sourcebooks. I could easily be wrong, but I'm assuming the production of the Power Sourcebooks (Source Sourcebooks?) is a driving market factor right now.

I'd guess Ki and [-]Shadow[/-] Psionic for the sources, since those two are the best-defined right now (and Ki is basically a lock, with the monk playtest). I think "Elemental" may be superfluous, and I'd be surprised if we saw it any time soon. I'm guessing it got rolled into the Arcane and Primal sources.

Race-wise, I think we'll see a collection of races from the Psionics Handbook and/or Dark Sun, in addition to the Wilden. I'm on much shakier ground here, though. I'm guessing Githyanki, Githzerai, Dromites, and then... no clue, other than Wilden.

All I can say is there better be Psionics or some pyrokenesis is gonna be happening at WoTC headquarters. Also can I have Elan, pretty please with sugar on top!!!

But seriously, I think Psionics and Ki are highly likely as locked. Shadow I could see fitting in if they can squeeze it in. I actually find it could be a neat grouping/shared idea. In that you got Ki which is about harnessing the soul, Shadow which deals with death/Shadowfell thus probably dealing with spirits and Psionics who have mediums, it just works so well.

I'm predicting Shadow and Ki powersources. I think they had to do three powersources for PHB I because you needed the iconic classes, but spreading powersources out over a year isn't the best.

I've read the argument about fully describing two power sources so we can get two power source books in other forums as well on PHB3. Considering we are getting Martial Power 2 and there is certainly enough material for Arcane Power 2 as well, I don't see why that is needed. I expect 4 Psi, 2 Ki, 2 Shadow And Martial Power 2, Arcane Power 2, Psionic Power in that year as well.
