A Problem of Nobility or Things that go Bump in the Night (Covaithe Judging)

Georg waits for the group to leave the room together before divulging his thoughts. He holds up the tooth and frowns. I almost wish that I had no knowledge of this, for its size and shape indicate that it is from the mouth of a black dragon. Such items as these do not come cheaply in gold or blood. I do not know this city well, so I will follow whoever has the best idea of where to gather information.

[sblock=OOC]I will make a Streetwise roll, but it isn't going to be that great either. Perhaps if we get enough "successes" we may get some leads.

Xoc finishes the last of his tea and stands up. "Well then, Corporal, I believe we shall take our leave of you and begin our mission - we won't trouble you with the details of our investigation, as I am sure you have much work to attend to. We will be in touch soon. Good day."

Xoc walks outside, beckoning for the rest of the group to do likewise. Once they finish their business in the shop, he addresses his colleagues. "I concur with Kruk and Grim - someone has to be leaving the bodies, and I bet that someone could be persuaded to spill his or her guts. But first, I'd like to hear what our wizard friend has to say about this tooth."

[sblock=OOC]Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I'd prefer leaving and not discussing the how and why of our investigation in front of the Corporal. We can't do any good by giving him information he doesn't need, and if we need to question him further we can always come back. Trust no one! [/sblock]

"By Crom's beard!....A black dragon! I've only heard about them in epic tales. And now I can honestly say that I was able to hold a tooth of one of them!" Kruk's eyes gleam and it's obvious that he can't contain his excitement "Wow!" Kruk now lowers his volce as the party is now outside the tea shop. He adjusts his plate armor and clangs his axe against his new shield as if to test it out. "I'd like the chance to hold the head of such a beast. Maybe we'll get the chance."

Johnmeier1, I second the DM's coments, nice roll indeed

So, please let me know the group's actions. Is it to try and ferret out information or is it to go and wait until evening to try and catch a murderer?

My vote is the wait until evening and catch someone or something in the act, but I'll go with the flow.

Xoc gives Kruk an enthusiastic slap on the back. "Hah, that'd look nice and ominous mounted over a fireplace, eh Kruk? You can have the head, but I'm staking my claim to the rest - imagine how much steak that would be!" Obviously enthralled by his own idea, Xoc pulls out a small journal and scribbles "to-do list #42 - kill dragon, eat dragon steak" in small, barely legible handwriting.

"As for our plan," the Orc says as he shoves the small journal back in his pouch, "I think it's wise to head down and see if we can't catch our prey in the act. There are six of us - we could surround the drop-off point on all sides, and have us a nice little ambush. What say ye, gentlemen?"

[sblock=ooc]
Yeah, eveningtime scope out sounds like a plan to me. Props to Georg on our first successful roll![/sblock]

Genetlemen? Carolina glares at the orc as he apparently leaves her out of the decision making, but quickly offers her opinion anyway.

"The stakeout is the only way," she says. "But it is unfortunate that someone else has to die in order for us to even begin our mission."

The group heads off to the guardhouse and set up some lookout points at each of the three thoroughfares that spill out in front of the guardhouse. The night begins to darken and the Lamplighter guildmembers are beginning their rounds. The flickering lanterns at the street corners provide a soft glow in the darkness. The group peers through the growing shadows in hopes of finding the culprit in the darkness.

You see a small form coming up Wyvern street, carrying a sack over his shoulder, the sight is almost comical as the creature struggles with the obviously heavy load. The heavily cloaked figure stops for a moment at the end of the street and looks up to make sure the coast is clear. Seeing the group of heavily armed individuals he fingers a ring on his hand and seems to be deciding what to do.

FYI, I rolled a 20 on your perception check Georg

1d20+11=22, 1d20+11=17, 1d20+4=16, 1d20+2=14, 1d20+2=22, 1d20+2=5, 1d20-1=7

Georg looks down Wyvern street while whispering to his nearby companion I think one of the culprits is approaching, a small creature with a large sack trying to stay hidden. He tries to get a better look at the figure's features and guess what it may plan to do now as he moves slowly towards it, while bringing the words of a short spell to his lips.

[sblock=OOC]I'm not sure how far away it is or if it can see us. Georg will move 2 squares closer to it using Stealth and will try to get a better idea of what they are dealing with either the creature or the reason it is focusing on its ring using Arcana (or appropriate knowledge the DM rolls) If he is 5 squares or less away, he will ready an action to cast light OR if more than 5 to move 5 squares and cast light on a square behind the creature.
Stealth = 20+0=20
Arcana = 9+9=18

Woah, that's alot of 20's and I'm using them all up on skills!

Georg manages to stay out of sight long enough to get close to the creature that you've alerted the others to. As you approach, you manage to peek a bit under the cloak:
[sblock=Georg]
You realize that the creature is a gnome, you're unsure what the ring is or what it would be used for.
[/sblock]

After you cast the spell of light, all can easily see the small cloaked figure now and, more importantly, the sack carried over its shoulder. It's eyes widen in a panic and it calls out athe words in a melodic language as the ring flares brightly for a moment than inky blackness fills the street. It snuffs out the light spell and blocks your vision. You hear hurried footsteps running away from you, the chase is on!

You recognize this as a Cloud of Darkness that the drow elves have the ability to innately generate.

Skill Challenge Time!

To Catch a Gnome...

Feel Free to roll anything you feel would be appropriate under the circumstances.

Most obvious: Acrobatics, Athletics, Perception, Streetwise
[/sblock]

Raiyek, seeing the small figure disappear and hear it start to flee, runs after it and tries to pierce the darkness. "Quickly, we mustn't let it get away!" he calls quietly to his companions.
[sblock=OOC]Sorry for not posting much so far! Sheesh, I go on a trip for a couple days and you guys explode ahead ;)

Anyway, for the skill challenge I'll start with a Perception roll. Remember that anyone withing 5 squares of me gets +1 to Perception checks, because I'm an elf, and we're awesome like that ;)

Perception: 1d20+11=16. Man, that's a crappy roll. It just might do it still, though ...

I also wanted to try some Religion recollection on that tooth, because you never know. But that can wait until after the chase, now.[/sblock]
