L4W Discussion Thread III

So now, humbled by the cunning of a message board deity that obviously has a personal grudge against me, I turn to you for help. What am I missing? How do I turn that option on? Will I really be able to roleplay an Int 10 character when it seems I'm functioning more at a 2?

It's probably not a question of your intelligence stat, I think you're just missing a required proficiency feat. ;)

The idea I had, which I didn't fully spell out here, is that the Vulkar worshipers in Daunton don't view warforged and their Forges as properly part of Vulkar's domain. They view the making of warforged as a matter of arcane magic, not divine, and somewhat suspicious. In contrast, Imperial believers in Eefeystos have no such prejudice and view warforged as "fine examples of the divine craftmanship of Hefaystos" (as Mal Malenkirk's PC Hadrak put it).

Ah! Now Hadrak's view are by default the Eefaystos imperial cult doctrine? Cool.

Is there any use to the giant language, and could it be reasonably substituted for something else (like Magari), if the judges are alright with it? It's pretty much the only thing keeping me from playing a half-orc, as I think Magari should be the dominant language in the Valley of bones, and it justifies my character's accent if Allarian isn't a primary language to him.

Also, I'd be willing to have Matlal suffer from complete illiteracy for any concessions in this regard.

If a judge thinks it sounds reasonable I'll make a proposal thread if need be.

I'm about to submit my second character, a Bladling Invoker. I have some questions about the gods of Surtyr. Has the pantheon have been build. If I want my character to follow Thor, is it the equivalent of Joven (as both rule over ligthning and thunder).

Surtyr was just invented... no thought was given to gods. So if you want to fill in a pantheon, go for it.

I did think a little bit about Thor and Joven in particular... The storm aspect of Joven certainly lines up with Thor. But the king of the gods aspect of Joven lines up better with Odin. I didn't really think of a good resolution for that issue. I suppose the Surtyr/Valhyr version of Joven might have two aspects, a Thor aspect and a Joven aspect. Or, Thor might alternately line up with Vulkar because of the hammer.

But, neither of those options seems particularly great. Maybe someone can think of something better? Or just go ahead and say Thor is Joven, and worry about Odin later? (Surtyr/Valhyr are pretty distant culturally from Allaria and the Imperium, if the pantheon analogies break down a little bit I don't think that's too horrible.)

Instead of adding additional gods to the setting or re-interpreting new gods, why not have a more animistic religion in the Norse-analogue islands? Rather than worshipping a personification or anthromorphism of the storm, the character worships the storm itself, an idealization of all that is a storm.

I like Ken's suggestion. I think the feel and races for these places suggests a strong connection with the primal power source, and Ken's idea would suit that very well.

I'm not sure where that would leave Velmont's invoker though. Invokers pretty much need a deity - or do they?

Not really. For starters, according to the book Invokers commonly worship the pantheon as a whole rather than having a specific patron, since they're more gods vs primordials than god vs god. And even that's just flavor. Invokers get so much thunder and lightning powers that you could easily say they follow the aspect of the storm.
