New D&D video game in the works. Its a MMO

The reference to the competing product would likely be the rumored Neverwinter Nights MMO being made by Cryptic Studios, which is owned by Atari.

That's an assumption, not a specific mention of a new D&D MMO. The fact that a new D&D MMO is in development is not mentioned in the article and speculation to that end elsewhere is just that. . . speculation. I'll be more impressed when there's more to this breaking story than "Some guy online said it, so it must be true!" :erm:

Too bad it's an MMO, which in and of itself pretty much takes me out of the market to play it. I want to buy a game and play it, not rent server space for a character by subscription.
Yeah, this sums up my thoughts exactly. I'm growing real tired of that whole business model, personally.

If there is a 4e D&D game, I wouldn't want it to be a MMO.
I'd want it to be a turnbased console game (possibly multiplayer so I could play with friends).

But that's just me and my personal preference...

Weird. I play MMOs all the time, and it usually feels exactly like buying a game and playing it.

I know! I could've sworn I spent money on LotRO, and spend hours playing it. But maybe not!

In all seriousness, most MMOs these days have a "lifetime-subscription" option available, which makes things easier.

Having this sentence in a lawsuit worth a million dollar or more is certainly way above "Some guy online said it". It practically confirms the already existing rumour of an D&D MMO.

Then, luckily for you and Shemeska, many MMOs are entirely free to play, with only additional features costing money. :)

Guild Wars is the only big MMO with that subscription model. And this is still highly experimental and other companies shy away from it. All other Free2play MMOs are very small, something a D&D MMO won't be (just because of the license cost). Cryptics current MMO has a subscription and an item store. their other confirmed MMO in production, Star Trek Online, will also have both as far as I am informed.

Not that many.
Also, lifetime accounts are only offered before the game is released (to pay off credits). After the release only monthly subscriptions are available.

Yes, but how many MMO's are turn based?

There are several tactical turn based MMOs.
But I only know one turn based MMORPG (Doofus, like I said in my first post) and a new DD MMORPG will certainly not use this model. Doofus is very far from mainstream and has a small subscription base. The D&D license is too important to make such kind of experiments, especially as Atari has money problems.

I'm quite confused here.

On the one hand, I absolutely hate DDO. I think the game is freaking terrible, and I don't understand how anyone can enjoy it.

On the other hand, I also hate Atari. This owes exclusively to having been laid off by them 3 days before Christmas with no warning whatsoever.

On the third hand, I would love to see another stab at a D&D MMO, even if I haven't yet found a game with the level of polish and playability of WoW and I have serious doubts that this will be it.

On the fourth hand, I'm concerned by the fact that I've suddenly got four hands. o_0
