[4e] New Campaign Discussion Thread

So. I'm gonna start a new game.

What I Know So Far

Chargen
-- PCs are all gladiators (generally unwillingly), but this is not a gladiator game. Players are welcome to create full-on Gladiator PCs, but be sure to read all of the information I have posted here first

-- 6th level start (PCs have been gladiators at least since 5th level)
-- 3 magic items (not owned by the PC, for use in the arena only), Level 5/6/7
-- 1000gp of gear of which 100gp per level spent as a gladiator is considered 'owned' by the player (example: if you became a gladiator starting at 4th level, you'd have 300gp of the 1000gp be personal gear)
-- Free Weapon/Implement Expertise feat *
-- Free Mounted Combat feat *
-- Anything in the Character Builder is fair game, but may need to be reflavored

PC Backgrounds
-- Should include how you came to the Arena, the circumstances, willingly or unwillingly, all that
-- IMPORTANT: The PCs are hoping/planning to escape or otherwise gain their freedom, so they should want out of this bloody brutal life
-- Backgrounds should include what (if anything) the PC wants to do after regaining freedom
-- Read the 'This is the Ancient World' section below and frame your backgrounds within that space, but feel free to invent people, conflicts, cities (nations and citystates) so long as they work into the basic premises in some way
-- Exceptional backgrounds (especially ones that I steal ideas for in World Building** and who give me lots of fun hooks) will earn XP and possibly other ingame benefits

There will be
-- IMPORTANT: Bonded mounts. Not immediately, but you should - as players - want to have PCs who will share an empathic bond with a fantastic creature of some kind. This is a requirement for the metagame, not a requirement for your PCs. What your PC thinks about the bond is totally up to you. Ranger Beastmasters would have a better bond or a bonded mount AND a beast companion
-- The mounts will all be the same (TBD) fantastic creature

It is the Ancient World
-- Arkhosia and Bael Turath (the Dragonborn and the Tieflings) are at the height of their power, and wage an endless bloody war
-- Nerath (Humankind) is a new-comer to the world scene, large and growing, but trying to keep a relatively low profile with the likes of Arkhosia and Bael Turath around
-- The Dwarves have revolted and some have thrown off the yoke of slavery to their Giant masters. After centuries of slavery, the Dwarves are returning to claim their ancient mountain homes
-- The Eledin are in the midst of their racial disintegration with the Eladrin advocating for withdrawal into the Feywild, the Elves rallying to places of power in the Wilds and the Drow defending their dark kingdom from the return of the Dwarves
-- Halflings are the Disowned, their gods having abandoned them for unknown reasons, they wander the world in caravans, seeking their Promised Land and a new God
-- Though mighty empires sprawl the land, there are still wilds and monsters aplenty

What I Don't Know
-- What civilization is host to the PCs at the start (since it could really be anything at all)

------------------

Again, looking for 3 to 4 PCs of middle Heroic Tier, Gladiators whose Players want to play in a campaign where their PCs have bonds to fantastic creatures/mounts.

Interested?

* To add these in the Character Builder click on the little yellow house in the Feat Choice Checklist box on the Build>Feats tab of the Builder. (thanks eblue562) for ferreting that out.

** I tend to like real-world flavorings, Arkhosia will be somewhat Roman, the Bale Turath will be somewhat Middle Eastern or Egyptian (or some sort of blend), etc.

I'm interested.

Mounted combat seems odd for a gladiator game. Do they have chariots or something?

Another question: How do I add Mounted Combat and Weapon/Implement Expertise in the Character Builder, or can I? Does anyone know? I can't seem to figure it out.

Clarified things in the first sentence, the players begin as gladiators with a plan to escape - this is not a gladiator game, only that the starting conditions are those

About Mounted Combat: The arena combats are many and varied, mounts, vehicles, you've seen it all

(and looking into adding free feats in Character Builder)

Interested!!!

Any problems with Bael Turath controlled by Tieflings, but they employ also humans? If Tieflings only, is Revenant allowed?

Idea: Former temple guard in Bael Turath. Then being disgraced and sold into slavery.
Class: Monk. If not allowed, Rogue.

I don't have access to builder, hope this isn't a to big problem. As I understood, we will gain the mounts later in-game?

Insight: Thought I had a way to trick CB into adding bonuses, but I don't. Will keep looking.

Walking Dad (and others): The Great Empires will be ruled by the dominant races -- Arkhosia by Dragonborn (possibly dragons), Bael Turath by Tieflings (possibly demons), Nerath by Humans (possibly anything at all at the helm).

In those empires minority races will live alongside and/or be enslaved by the dominant races. In Bael Turath and Arkhosia however, non-Tiefling and non-Dragonborn races are generally 2nd class citizens at best.

All that to say: Human, Revenant, Monk, Rogue, temple guard, sold into slavery... all on the table.

Correct on the mounts.

Not having the Character Builder is fine, I will enter your PC into it for my own reference.

Interested,

Thinking either a classic Dwarven hammer and shield Fighter or Revenant Assassin.

The Dwarf would be born and raised as a slave, turned into a gladiator after showing considerable combat skill during a failed escape attempt.

The Revenant, sent to the gladiator pits by the Church of the Raven Queen to hone his skills.

Thanks for the quick answer. As Phaezen seems interested into a Revenant, too, I got a new little idea:

What about the Shifters as a special breeding effort of Bael Turath to create better scouts/warriors. Also please go with the Egypt theme for the Tieflings!

Added idea: The Warforged could be something similar, made as legionnaires (fighters) to command by the dragonborn warlords.

So my character would be

Name: Caged Fury
Race: Razorclaw Shifter
Class: Monk (Dex/Wis based)

Hmm.

I'll see if I can come up with a concept...

I'm not really joining new games, but since Toranthar was cancelled, I suppose I can make an exception.
