Yeah, evasion and mettle should be restricted with some common sense house rules.
As with a Reflex save for any creature, a character must have room to move in order to evade. A bound character or one squeezing through an area cannot use evasion.

Why should they be restricted? Just because they thwart a handful of spells IF they make their save in the first place is hardly a reason to restrict evasion & mettle unless you are running a game where you want casters to be dominant, then I see no reason to restrict 2 rules that endured 3.0 and 3.5 full revisions.How would mettle interact with the orb spells? I don't think making your fort save is supposed to allow you to negate all the damage it deals, does it?
It seems that it is more of damage first, then the target makes a save to see if the secondary effect applies or not. Meaning that mettle would be useless in this context, as the damage cannot be prevented since it has already occured...
