Which edition poll for October

What are you playing now?

  • Poll closed .
At the moment, I am not playing anything. However, I am reading and imagining possibilities with several RPGs - most notably Pathfinder and True20. I am also looking over recently purchased Exalted core rules and FantasyCraft core rules. As Pathfinder is listed, I chose it from the list.

I'm surprised at how many are playing 4e, but perhaps I should not be. While some of its setting concepts worked very well with my own tendencies in home brewing (usually a PoL situation involving a fantasy late bronze age), the mechanics were so antithetical to my play style that I could never get into it.

I just finished up my HackMaster game. Next up is Star Wars d6, followed by (probably) FATE Supers.

I want to get either a 4e D&D or Rogue Trader game started on the weekends.

Every EN world poll regarding 4E puts it at around a 40% success rate amongst EN World poll-takers.
Does that mean it's trending upwards, then?

This poll places that figure above 48%, when you include those who play 4e exclusively or non-exclusively. It passes 50% when you exclude anonymous responses.

Nah - the more responses come in, the lower the 4E score tends to go until it bottoms out at around 40%. Within a few hours after this poll was released, the 4E percent was around 60%. Since then it has continued to decline.

Voted Pathfinder RPG thought atm my gaming group is recovering from the busy summer season and a player change or two. We havent had a steady game in a couple of months now.

We are set to start a new campaign, Council of Thieves using full PFRPG rules in a few weeks. Two of us rolled characters last weekend, other two sometime this coming week.

I would have liked a 3.5 + Pathfinder option as well.

Mongoose Traveller

Is that really a thing? :erm:

I saw a mongoose in a cage once, but I don't see any connection to the great sci fi game of "figuring out your character's cool history, then not bothering to actually play", which is what my friends and I did with Traveller in the olden days.

4e support

Does that mean it's trending upwards, then?

I agree with DaveMage -- I think 4e support here is about the same. The answer is always close to 45%, so 40-50% support, however/whenever you look at it in this poll, seems to indicate no substantial change.

Which surprises me. I thought it would grow in strength over time, to eventually dominate. Perhaps it's no longer growing, or perhaps it's cycling people in and back out again (Pathfinder might be taking some 4e experimenters), and maybe will eventually recapture those folks. Who knows?

Of course, you could ask if the market share remains the same but the size of the overall pie is changing -- did 4e and Pathfinder grow the market, like the early days of 3e, or not? I have no way of knowing the answer to that, but my gut feel, being somewhat dejected and finding less interesting stuff to buy for myself, is that the overall market is neither growing nor shrinking significantly -- probably hit by the economy like everything else, but not people jumping on board or dropping off in large numbers.

Oh, and you could also complain that the demographics of EnWorld are "skewed", and well they might be, but I really don't care, since there's nothing we can do about that, and again, I don't there's been a huge change in the people here.
