[3.5] Answering the Call

"Are you mad, dwarf?! We just wiped out nest of hobgoblins along with their gorilla's and hellhounds, we had time to recuperate and you want trial by combat?!"
Menno asks incredolously.
"Yes, let's hear the details. There must be something we're missing here."

Curate Anselm says, "Nearly two decades ago, the hierarchies of Heironeous and Clangeddin Silverbeard helped settle a border dispute that threatened to plunge two neighboring states into war. It turned out that instigators within each church sought to exacerbate the situation for their own ends. Each hierarchy demanded justice, but jurisdictional problems made trials problematic. As a compromise, the offenders were handed over to inquisitors of the opposing church, and it was ruled that further disputes in matters of justice between Heironeous and Clangeddin could be resolved by trial by combat upon request."

The curate addresses Korax next.

"We shall, of course, honor your request."

The aged priest turns to the heroes.

"Lars, since you and your companions have brought the charges, it falls upon you to accept this challenge. I compel nothing. Accept or not of your own free will. If you accept, each group shall field an equal number of combatants in one hour at a location of my choosing."

"Certainly I will accept," answers Orinar in his booming voice, his cold stare locked upon the dwarf. "If a criminal refuses to stand trial, than it is up to goodly folk to bring them to justice."

"I will accept, of course. I'll fight as the Archpaladin wills it, in this matter o' justice. Curate, does the Treaty require battle to the death, surrender, or simply unconsciousness? I don't want my companions to volunteer for this battle without knowing what victory or defeat must involve," Lars replies.

Lars stares at the dwarf and his comrades, silently focusing on Heironeous' gift of sight to determine whether or not these opponents are truly evil or just somewhat unscrupulous.

"Trial by combat? I guess we prove them guilty by killing them? I'd prefer another outcome, but this 'trial' will make tat impossible. I will help fight the rude dwarf if tat is the only answer." The gnome nods his head with a smile as if to confirm his answer with himself.

Curate Anselm answers. "The battle is to the surrender, but unconsciousness and death are possibilities. This is not a mock battle. The dangers are real. Of course, clerics monitor the fight. Healing magic is available to avoid death, but not to aid one side against the other.

"Since we are all agreed on this course of action, you have one hour to prepare yourselves. Meet at the gate to the inner bailey at that time. The trial shall be conducted therein with appropriate witnesses in attendance."

Lars detects no evil from the dwarf's party except from the twin human males. Lars detects faint evil from both of them.
