Pathfinder 1E d20 Modern Patronage/Pathfinder Project

There were a few things introduced in d20 Modern that later made it into the 3.5e revision. In a (very small) way, d20 Modern was a bridge between 3e and 3.5e versions of d20.

I *might* be interested in something that keeps d20 Modern rules in print combined with some improvements as Pathfinder did for 3.5e. If it were radically different (like dropping the base classes, dropping the Wealth system), I wouldn't be interested at all. I'm not seeing very much in Pathfinder that I think would "improve" d20 Modern. I've been using True20 anyway for games that I previously would have run in d20 Modern.

I'm not convinced there would even be a large enough market for it though. There's already Grim Tales, True20 and Modern20 out there, for example.

Personally, I'm also not a fan of the patronage model and wouldn't sign up for one. The only benefit to patronage would be a concrete gauge of interest prior to getting started. I don't think your numbers are realistic (as to what you would get for support - I'm not saying that's not what it would cost to develop the project - I have no idea what that would be). Sadly, I'm predicting Chill 3e vaporware all over again. :(

On the other hand, you do have two well-respected names from the d20 Modern era as designers. That could serve as an anchor to attract a couple more folks of that caliber to the project.

In short, if it came out I'd definitely look at it and consider buying it, but I'm not going to commit beforehand as a patron.

Hope this is helpful and not too negative. B-)

Personally I am not particularly interested in a Pathfinderized version, I'd probably go a different (4E) route, but I think there are quite a few people out there that would really want something like this, and I am certainly curious to see how it goes. ;)

I always feel like a shill doing this, but what the heck: I've been working on a 4e-inspired version of d20 Modern on my site. The tag for all the posts is here (start from the bottom): Critical Hits » 4th power project

Though obviously I'd rather play my own version and am not particularly a fan of Pathfinder, I'd still throw in, just to see what they do with it. Stephens definitely knows his stuff, and Super Genius Games is run by Stan! who put out some of my favorite 3rd party d20 Modern products under "The Game Mechanics." I have a shelf full of d20 Modern books already that I probably won't play with as written and just use as inspiration, a new one would be greatly welcome. Plus it gives me more to steal from for my game.

A couple more quick thoughts...

There's also Spycraft to compete with out there already, especially for non-ability score base classes for modern roles like soldiers and techs.

There's some 3PP d20 Modern support out there that would be, at least to me, required additions to the base rules. 22 Talent Trees/Another 22 Talent Trees from Bloodstone Press, Hot Pursuit chase rules from Adamant Entertainment, and The Book of Distinctions and Drawbacks Modern from Cryptosnark Games come to mind. And companies like RPGObjects, Big Finger Games, The Game Mechanics Ronin Arts and more had some great products containing rules that would be great additions to a core modern d20 rule set as well.

I'm sorry to be dense. Is this an revision of d20 Modern, or a Modern game built off of the revised Pathfinder "engine"?

And yeah, not that you are counting votes, but my $$$ go for 4e modern. It would seem well suited for modern cinematic mayhem.

If Stevens and the rest don't believe in their own project enough to find more traditional sources of funding, I don't believe in them enough to shell out $50+

Hey arscott,

We actually have some definite ideas for what we want to do but the thread was more of an feeler to see if people were interested in the idea to begin with. Once we set up the patronage page we'll spell out what our design goals are and what we plan on doing.

Thanks for your interest though!

Hyrum.

Never seen you mention it before, so I think I'll let it slide. ;)

Loved the 22 Talent Trees/Another 22 Talent Trees books. (And I think I bought them for $1 each.) I agree that there would have to be, at least, a lot more Talents to justify it.

Which reminds me, I have the feeling that the Ability Score Classes/Descriptive Classes divide will be a pretty tricky one for this project.

Modern Pathfinder Dataset for Hero Lab

This is a re-imaging of the MSRD for the Pathfinder Role Playing Game. The dataset can be found at:
Modern Beta - Done - Lone Wolf Development Forums

This is a beta file and is not complete yet. At the moment the only Core MSRD, (minus the advanced classes, they are coming later on), was converted over, (there are place holder files for the other settings).

A lot was changed to put into the Hero Lab Pathfinder dataset. Some of this was done due to software and programing skills limits. Some rules were changed to fit easier into the Pathfinder setting. I will go over a few to help navigate through the dataset.

Occupations are now traits. They are now assigned 2 class skills each.

Action and Reputation points are out and all Feats, Talents and/or Abilities were adjusted to fit the change.

Wealth Bonus is now a skill. All the gear and items have the original Wealth DC, but there was no real way of converting everything to gold and/or work in a Wealth roll otherwise. It’s not perfect, but close.

All classes get an AC bonus every other level.

The Base classes (the only ones in at the moment) are listed under NPC classes and all go up to 20th level with added new Talents.

Feats that are similar to a Pathfinder feat were not copied over. Just the new feats were put in.

Weapons – Are assigned either: simple, martial and/or exotic weapons.
There is no archaic weapon, and or firearm feats.

Skills – Skills were already rolled over into the Pathfinder setting were removed. Repair is rolled over into the craft skills. Treat injury was rolled over into heal, etc.

FX – same as feats, whatever was similar to a Pathfinder magic item and/or spell was not copied over. Just the new items and spells were put in.

Weapon Enhancements are under Item Powers, (like adding keen to a weapon).

There are a few Occult Languages added and are listed under Secret language.

That is all I can think of at the moment. More will be coming later on, but this is a good start for the community.

I can be reached on the Hero Lab forum under the user name: Frodie.

BTW – Thank you to everyone that helped out with this project, the Lone Wolf staff, ShadowChemosh, TCArknight, (who is doing a D20 Modern dataset for the Hero Labs D20 dataset), and many more! Thank you all for the help and ideas.
