So which hobby is bigger? Collecting toy trains or gaming?

Lots of people know about D&D, but toy train hobbyists have a TV show.

So hard to decide... we're both freaky weirdos on the outskirts of society.

Voted trains.

My father is into model railroads, etc and I know it's very big.

Am I 100% sure it is bigger than D&D? No - and especially because I don't know exactly what you mean by bigger, but my assumption is number of people who would call it a hobby and participate it in somewhat regularly.

What do you mean by toy trains? Model railroading?

I think that's also a hobby on the decline, but I'd wager it's still quite a bit bigger than gaming.

Assuming you mean model railroading and not actual "toy" trains. Model railroading has hundreds of manufacturers serving its customers, a relatively healthy retail presence still (bundled, frequently, in more generic hobby stores), several magazines in circulation, etc. It's still a big deal.

Hardly; I have no idea where you got that idea. You tell someone you collect model railroading stuff and research the old Age of Rail and they'll look on you as nostalgic and creative at the same time. Everyone knows what old trains are like and an interest in them is pretty mainstream when compared to D&D. There are about 15 American magazines about the hobby, and from what I understand it's pretty strong in Britain and France. So, I'd say they vastly outnumber D&D fans.

We had a great TV show once upon a time!

And now we have had 3 movies. Granted, imo they all sucked, but beggars/choosers and all that.

My vote for gaming. But the nice thing about trains is that pirating isn't such a big deal.

Scale model trains hands down in just about any category versus PnP RPGs. If you factor in computer and console games, then trains get left way behind.

There are many manufacturers of trains and train accessories and the products range in price from fairly inexpensive to "whoa nelly!"

It is a construction/play hobby as well as a collector's hobby.

For the most part, the train you buy today will still work with the trains you buy 5 years from now.

As was stated up thread there are many magazines devoted to the hobby.

My unscientific take is that model trains are much more "mainstream" than gaming and have been around for much longer.

As someone who is involved in both hobbies (and IMHO, not a freaky weirdo on the outskirts of society :p), in my estimation, in terms of number of people engaged in the hobby, model railroading is the larger of the two.

Assuming you meant Model Railroading, and roleplaying/miniatures gaming, I regret that I think it is bigger than gaming.

By the way I don't think model railroaders want their hobby to be called toy trains any more than we want our hobby to be called playing make-believe with action figures. ;)
