The New Red-Box...

This got kinda lost in the thread (in fact, only Tuxgeo has mentioned it), but the box set will allow people to start from commoner, and, by going through an adventure, choose their class depending on the choices that they make on the way.

That´s really awesome. :) And this thread needs more awesome, badly.

Personally, I applaud the re-introduction of the Red Box set.

I am one of them old-tymie gamers that joined the hobby in 78-79 and have played every edition there is.

I am not the audience for this product. My nephew is. Heck, my wife's friend Lisa who never played a RPG until she joined our table early last year is.

Folks that have never played D&D (and even some of those who have) are confronted with a wall of powers in the PH before they get to the rules for playing. The character creation process is very non-linear in the current Core Rules (I have likened it to printing hyper-text docs).

Enter the Red Box. Or, instant Game in a Box if you will. A linear tutorial of character creation and play. It can work solo or be a group experience. It gives you a taste of what D&D can be for the low price of $20.00.

The Red Box is also a response to Game Stores' need to have a specific product for customers entering the hobby for the first time.

No one (well not that many) is going to plunk down aprox. $100 for the PH, DMG, and MM to test drive an unknown. Not to mention handing little Timmy or Tina that much text and expecting them to be able to play is ludicrous.

BTW: 5 classes (all new builds) Cleric, Rogue, Fighter, Wizard, and Ranger. 5 Races Humans, Dwarves, Elves, Eladrin, and Halflings. All new powers. Nearly all new feats.

I will probably pick those up in the Heroes of the Fallen Lands since I don't need the Red Box. Even if I don't I will have them with my DDI subscription.

Its all full of win. Does it mean it will work? Nope. It could still flop, this isn't the 80s when D&D was King Kong. But it does give the hobby a much needed and affordable entry point for the game and provides a road map deeper into said hobby.

Coupled with the plans for D&D Encounters, Evergreen tile sets, monster tokens with the Essentials monster box set for each monster in it I see a good chance to bring new people into the hobby. If it entices some of the older lasped players back into the fold, even better.

Ultimately, if this program is successful it will benefit the hobby as a whole. Many folks entered the RPG hobby through D&D and many move on to other games as time goes on.

My two coppers,

So it actually covers levels 0-2 then. Three levels, just like the original Red Box :D

This is awesome beyond words. I am happy to hear that. I think that kind of intro could be really cool.

Is this solitaire character creation process the same as the adventure you are talking about? Then it pretty much plays like the original Red Box, if true.

When I started playing D&D back in the mid-eighties, I paid something like twelve dollars for the Red Basic set and about a month later another fourteen dollars for the Blue Expert set, if I remember correctly. That covered about a year of gaming before we fully converted to AD&D. We were running concurrent games.

I really applaud a twenty dollar price point for the introductory set, but what is the buy-in after that? A Player's Handbook to share and a Monster Manual a maybe a Dungeon Master's Guide for the DM?

Some blog said somewhere that WOTC should have created both a basic and an advanced version of 3e when it came out a decade ago. I agree, a simplified version that maybe created set character progression paths instead of inundating new players with too many choices. Have the basic set run maybe five to eight levels and encourage the players to move up to the "advanced" set that we currently had. I wonder is this what WOTC might be doing with 4e now?

The Aquisition line is "RedBox" -> D&D Essentails -> Hardbacks

D&D Essentials: Players grab one of the two D&D essentials Player Class/Race boocks. There like $19.95. DM's Get the DM Kit and the Monster Vault. It's like $40 for both but comes with more "stuff" like tiles and tokens and stuff. The DM Kit has the RUles compendium.
