Glorantha - a d20 setting?

Indeed, that was a big issue with Heroquest. I got a few bits and pieces about the original design for Heroquest (back in the 80s) and the issue was that it was turning into "super Runequest." I remember one Humakt HQ that potenially allowed an attack every Strike Rank in a round. That isn't what Greg wanted, so it never really saw the light of day.

Such a shame, it was exactly what my group were hoping for - we *wanted* a "super Runequest" back in the 80s! :(

The RQ2 book had an enticing section at the back about the 'forthcoming developments', most of which, sadly, were not forthcoming at all!

Cheers

Ransom

You know, this talk of Ransoming PCs raises an interesting question. Why is it that ransoming was prevalent in RuneQuest games but not in D&D games? Did the early RQ2 mechanics provide support for this? I seem to recall that Runelords automatically got ransomed by their cults, but that may have just been my GM.

I don't think it was just the deadliness of the system. I have this idea in my head that either the rules or the setting directly addressed this.

The setting directly addressed this (presumably based on the idea of weregeld in certain cultures of similar background in the real world?).

Anyhow, it was a setting thing, and since it was spelled out as a possibility in the books it was an obvious thing for GMs and PCs to learn and take advantage of.

I had the luck of having Sandy Peterson show up at a local gaming event in the 80s (our annual "Bilbo's Birthday Party" event at our local FLGS). He waxed a bit on it. While some of this I only got second hand, it seems that what they were designing and while it sounded cool, it also sounded like it would get old fast.

Well, some of them have appeared. Heroquest appeared, although not in the format most expected. We just got the Sartar campaign book, and it appears to be almost all that was promised (just missing the road encounters that were cut towards the end of development), according to this review. It just is for a different system.
