Wizards of the Coast has set aside some space in the RPGA area (the Sagamore Ballroom in the convention center) for anyone's D&D games, no matter the edition or the group that is running it.

Here is their announcement:

Embrace Your Edition: DM Your D&D Game in the Sagamore!

At Gen Con Indy this year, Wizards of the Coast invites you to run your Dungeons & Dragons game, regardless of edition, in the Sagamore Ballroom alongside the official Wizards games and the RPGA events. Events using original (Basic) D&D, 1st Edition AD&D, 2nd Edition AD&D, 3rd/3.5 Edition D&D, and 4th Edition D&D rules are all welcome in the Sagamore Ballroom this year, while space is available! Instead of being thrown into the mix with the other RPGs, you'll be able to run your game where all the D&D action is - taking advantage of the large D&D audience, access to Wizards staff, and help from the D&D HQ area. If you have questions on the Sagamore Ballroom D&D events or want more information, please visit www.baldmangames.com/gencon<http://www.baldmangames.com/gencon>.

This means that if you are running a D&D game, it will be placed in the Sagamore by default. Groups that run a variety of games in addition to D&D or that have large organized tournaments of their own already will still be placed with other RPGs as normal, but independent D&D games and smaller groups will be placed there.

Locations for most RPGs are currently in the registration system, so if you are wondering where your specific events have been placed, you can sign into your account to check where everything will be.

If you have any questions about how the RPGA area will work or how their HQ can help you, you can contact Wizards directly.

If you - for any reason - do not want to have your game placed in the Sagamore with all the other D&D games, just let us know and we'll find other suitable space for you.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Thanks,

Derek Guder

Brilliant! Welcoming and subtly subsersive at the same time. It's beautiful move I wouldn't have that WotC capable of. Whoever came up with it better get a bonus. :)

I don't get it... what is the trick? I see unity of D&D through out the ages...aka people playing with the basic booklets all the way up to any and all 4e suplemnts...showing a unified front...

we are all playing the same game after all...

That's not cool.

But GenCon gives an opt out, which is.

what isn't cool... if you want to be a unified gaming comunity you can...if not it is just a room, I mean really we always played in rooms of other people playing other games at gen con (some very disrupted games where yelling loader was more power comes to mind)

Actually, that seems pretty cool to me. WotC seems to be offering some level of support, or at least affection, for previous editions. What's your objection, shemmy?

I see wotc offering space and gen con making it the default. I was going to say that I didn't like it being mandatory, but it isn't. It seems like a cool thing.

Why wouldn't it be?

They stole this from my meetup! :)

We invite all versions of D&D at our monthly D&D Meetup, even Pathfinder is welcome, we always have. What we find is that there is common ground between the players and DMs, not battlefields like you often see in messageboard forums.

I think this is a great thing for Wizards to offer. I seriously doubt there is some sort of plot afoot, but those who are in doubt can feel free to opt out and/or don a tin foil cap.

I like this idea. It makes games easier to find and as potential DM for some 1e games at Gen Con this year at least I'll know my games aren't off in some hotel I've never heard of. :D
