Pathfinder 1E New to Pathfinder

Redbranch

First Post
Greetings,

After a long hiatus from D&D, I find myself GMing a new campaign with a small group of seasoned veterans (35+, playing since 1st ed). We decided to stick to 3.5 since we know it, have many of the books, and are casual gamers not seeking to reinvest. Then I discovered Pathfinder. It has re-inspired me and awakened my love of the genre. I ordered the Core rules and plan on getting the GM screen as I loath the 3.5 one. I am interested in the Crit/Fumble cards (Old school Rolemaster player here).

My question is: what other material would you recommend? We are playing in a world based on Norse mythology and culture.

I look forward to your input.

The Pathfinder Campaign setting (being re-released later this year for the Pathfinder system) has a country in it that a Norse feel to it. Realm of the Mammoth Lords. Little has changed there since barbaric times, frozen tundra, there is no unifying government, tribes rule, huge animals like mammoths (obviously), wholly rhinos, dinosaurs, the people have an affection for giants, etc.

The campaign setting is divided into nations that fit the bill for a particular styles of play or genre. If there is a kind of setting you wish to play, odds are it can be found there.

Err... you mean Land of the Linnorm Kings. The Realm of the Mammoth Lords isn't Norse, it's Clan of the Cave Bear.

They even screwed up and called the Ulfen Vikings once or twice in the older campaign setting book, I noticed. I didn't even catch it the first time or two I read it, because it was so obvious that the Ulfen were the Vikings.

I wouldn't really call calling an Ulfen a viking a "screw up" as much as it is, perhaps, a little bit lazy on the writing side of things. Being able to describe a creature as a viking does in one word what a more in-depth description cannot. And sometimes, sub-optimal choices are made under the remorseless tyranny of the word-count overlord.

We're updating the campaign setting as I write this, though, and I'll see if I can't fix it so that we don't actually call them vikings... unless, of course, we decide that we're okay with that. ;-)

Thanks for all the input.

I will check out Land of the Linnorm Kings. As far as Viking goes (@ James JAcobs) it was orignally a verb; the Norse went a viking. Just use it that way. There is no reason why the Ulfen can't go a viking (verb in their language to raid and loot).
