Does anyone else suffer from cangetmymaprightitis?

I draw a map, but then I'm just not happy with it, so I end up scrapping it and starting over.

Frustrating.

Hum--You can do what my anal-retentive ass does when creating a map.

Step 1: Find a topographical map of an area with varied terrain and note its scale which may show as 1:300,000 or as little as 1:24,000.

Step 2: Determine how big of an area you need. Hum, trying to list all the steps I use to make a map might take awhile.

Are you frustrated with Wilderness maps, Dungeon maps, or Encounter maps?

Step 3: Screw it, pinch one from the internets :p

Yes, I find that too.

I end up editing maps, more than anything else. There are so many good maps out there, in galleries, Map-a-day and such it is not hard to find something I want.

I have had this. Though I have had those moments where I just gave up and use the map I wasn't happy with and was later told how cool it was.

so, with me, I've learned that sometimes when I'm not happy with my map it doesn't necessarily mean that it's junk.

Do you mean battlemaps or area maps?

Gotta say, I don't worry about it. Maybe I'm a bit cavalier - but all it has to do - for me - is to serve its purpose, which is to further the fun. If it doesn't that job, it's a successful map.

Area maps... I'm ok at like the large scale view of a continent say... but once I get down to smaller local view... things just look weird. I guess I never feel like I get the scale correct or something.

I think I just need to step back and give it a day or so, then come back to it.

I lack an "artist" gene, though. I don't really care how it looks - hell, I'll explain it away to by players as being drawn my a sentient camel with a crayon, or a goblin child drawing it gleefully with the blood and entrails of a recent victim - it just has to do its job.

I can certainly appreciate that people have different values though!

My overland/regional maps are not a problem: I run FR so have plenty to choose from.

But my dungeon maps are normally pretty crappy. I prefer short 3-5 encounter "delves" for my dungeons/site adventures and I simply lack anything resembling artistic talent. But I do have hundreds of maps on my laptop (0One Games is a lifesaver for this) and I try and find the right map to use even while we are playing. Sometimes I amend it as we go.

That said, two weekends ago I drew the first dungeon map I have been happy with in over 20 years. And, yes, I will be using it!
