Some help from clever GMs, please!

I'm not sure if Minotaurs in your world still follow the labyrinth mythology. But you could play up that by having the PC notice his garden growing more and more each day at an alarming rate. It starts to spread out of control. After a few days, his racial "trait" has caused his garden to form into some sort of hedge maze (not necessarily bushes; it could be a maze of exotic plants or whatever matches the type of seeds he has). If his land is not open enough for an entire maze, it could be just big enough to fit on his plot of land, but if anyone goes inside it, it's magically bigger on the inside than it appeared to be on the outside.

I was going to post something very much like that- thank you for saving me the trouble!

Along with the other ideas for plants: the "literal" plants; the Treants- some other ideas include:

  1. Seeds from Awakened trees- see post #43 in the Campaign Ideas thread, linked in my sig.
  2. Seeds from other sentient(ish) plants, like shambling mounds and woodlings, Wildren and so forth from D&D, or Krinoids from Dr. Who. (Didn't see anything about the Druid being nice or actually knowing what the seeds were...) For some SERIOUS throwback action, make them Vegepygmy seeds.
  3. The hedge maze isn't merely T.A.R.D.I.S.-like, it actually contains gateways to various parts of Elysium, the Feywild, the Far Realms- anywhere interesting plants could be found.
  4. Audrey II- "FEEEEEEED me!"
  5. Melnibonean Vampire Trees

2) Seahorse, our Halfling Rogue, is spending the time at the city gates with a former adventuring companion (an Eladrin Warlord who is now in charge of the city's defence in a very tough crisis). I don't want her involved in any combats or anything, but I was hoping a mini adventure involving her could possibly flare up. This one is hard to explain without going into full campaign detail, so I'll leave it at that.

City gates, eh?

You could run a smuggling/anti-smuggling storyline mini adventure, with Seahorse as villain or hero.

You could have Seahorse take pity on someone coming to the gates searching for someone in the city. When Seahorse succeeds in finding the person who was being searched for, it is either a happy reunion OR the person Seahorse was helping is actually an assassin. (Big rogue vs assassin fight ensues.)

Seahorse buys, trades for or steals something at the gates and gets more (or less) than expected, like a magical lamp that is home to a bipolar, sulphurous (IOW, stinky) small but intelligent air elemental instead of a friendly wish-granting genie.

3) Lear, a human blood mage wizard, decided to teach a young wizard apprentice some new magic. Lear met the young guy a while ago, and is now deciding to use it to show the kid some new tricks. Lear is kind of evil, and the kid is a thief and gang member, so they get along well. Ideas on how to implement an apprentice into the game?

Watch an episode or 2 of Most Evil or Wicked Attraction (or Criminal Minds)- history is full of dangerous people who meet and start reinforcing each others' nastiest habits and darkest impulses. DC Snipers? Columbine? Too many serial killers to name?

Thanks a lot for the ideas, guys! A lot of them will definitely be used - there really are some great ideas here, especially considering I was pretty scant on the details.

The idea of a minotaur maze is a good one, although it's a fairly small plot of land. A treant in the centre actually works pretty well, too, especially considering how treants in my campaign are pretty cool, and the players seem attached to them.

I also like Danny's idea of a smuggling ring for Seahorse to get involved with - this actually *really* fits the character, as Seahorse was originally a smuggler!

And the idea of the blood mage/apprentice fueling each others' negative traits is a great idea - especially if I can get the wizard involved in some ganglang feuds!

Also, the Zahar/Kirra thing was probably explained poorly by me; Zahar is actually a Player Character, and Kirra is trying to help Zahar find a wife to satisfy Zahar's goal of becoming king. See, Kirra owes Zahar a big favour, because he saved her life.

Okay, so some more information on the situation at hand. It's pretty complicated, as feywild politics are wont to be. Which is really a lot of fun for both me and the players, who are often bewildered by everything that's going on (a favourite saying of the Drow Queen is "were there only ten of us alive, they would be divided into twelve different factions").

First, in my campaign, elves, eladrin, drow, shadar-kai, and "wood elves" are all the same race. This unnamed race is extremely sensitive to change, such that even changing political allegiance can create a new race. Elves are those that stayed on the material plane. Eladrin are those who believe in one mercantilism and aspects of imperialism, while drow tend to be isolationists (drow in my campaign are no more evil than eladrin). Shadar-Kai (disdainfully called "half-breeds" by most, or "Mixed folk" amongst themselves) are half-eladrin, half-drow who typically have divergent political views and alliances - Eladrin or Drow who waver in their beliefs turn into Half-breeds.

I tend to base half-breeds loosely upon the black civil rights movement in the 1960s, although they learn more towards Malcolm X than Martin Luther King. It's a good shorthand to explain the situation, at least.

Anyways, the PCs have been in the feywild for about a year in real time, going from level 8 to level 17 in the process. The idea is that the Eladrin all follow a king, and the drow all follow a queen, and the king and queen are married in a loveless marriage to jointly rule the feywild. To prevent infighting and assassination, if one dies, the other loses all power, and a new power struggle begins. Well, the Eladrin king was dying, and all hell broke loose.

One of the drow contenders for the throne, our BBEG, is for some reason involved in a poisoning plot - basically, she was involved in poisoning as many drow as possible. This poison turned the drow into vile abberations (driders, scorpion folk, and lovecraftian stuff galore). The PCs have been working at trying to get a cure - in fact, they were doing this for entirely selfish reasons, as Kirra had been infected.

The PCs now have the cure, although the main city is now under the control of warring factions (The eladrin military, ruled by a crazed Eladrin king who is now surprisingly and mysteriously healthy; the uninfected and very angry drow, ruled by a manipulative queen who wants to see her daughter marry an Eladrin and restore order to the feywild; the city-folk, a mix of Eladrin and half-breeds, ruled by an Eladrin who failed in his bid for power and is now seizing control of the city, Boris Yeltsin style; and the rioting Half-breeds, seeing for the first time powerful half-breeds having a say in the world's governance and deciding now is the time to rebel).

Some more info about our group:

1. Hammer is a minotaur fighter (dreadnought PP). He seeks to find the ancient Minotaur homeland, known as Kael Tessera or, more commonly, "The Mazeworks". Basically, a city that was founded by Imperialistic Tieflings, who used the Barbarian minotaurs that already lived in the natural chasms as cheap labour. Like all minotaurs, Hammer has an intense distrust of all forms of organized religion, focusing instead on the primal spirits of his ancestors and rudimentary star worship.

2. Seahorse is a halfling rogue. halflings in my campaign are basically seafaring gypsies, and Seahorse is no different. She used to be a smuggler and pirate of sorts. Seahorse is an incredibly ugly halfling, often being mistaken for a male. She is guarding the city wall from corrupted drow abberations - however, since the source controlling those aberrations has been killed by the PCs, the abberations are no longer attacking in controlled bursts. She is guarding the east gate simply because Tongs, an Eladrin Warlord (and a former PC who became an NPC), is working there. The smuggling plot is fun!

3. Lear is a PC turned NPC turned Villain turned back into a PC (Basically, the player ran him for a bit, decided he hated controllers, and abandoned him. I used the character as a villain, and had him killed in a fight. And then the player read through the new options available to wizards after Arcane Power came out, and reran the PC). So, Lear is a blood mage who has died twice, and is now very afraid of Hell. He is entirely self-serving and evil, but is also possessed by a Paladin (don't ask), who acts as Lear's conscience.

4. Zahar is a city-raised Half-breed bard who wants to become king. He has no idea how he can do that, considering how he's not an Eladrin (and only Eladrin can become kings). However, he is using his political clout to pursue this goal, and the fact that people such as the drow Queen are listening to him has caused many half-breeds to rebel against the social structure in place. Zahar, should he so choose, could probably have about 25% of the total population behind him.

5. Kirra is a drow huntress (daggermaster rogue) who originally had a hatred of all non-drow, due to her typical racial isolationist attitude. She is the cousin of Guineadh - the adopted daughter of the Drow Queen (direct blood relations are prohibited from seizing power in a power vacuum; Guineadh's lack of a blood tie makes her an ideal candidate for the throne).

Can you eat a talking plant? Can you eat a tiger-lilly? Imagine if this minotaur has a garden full of fierce dangerous plants, but when he harvests them, they each give whoever eats them a little buff. Consumable items are not popular with every group, but you could work out a way to present the plants harvest as discouted consumables. This way the minotaur's player can feel the garden has a real impact, instead of it just being a new way to get a treasure parcel.

As a rogue, she might be uniquely skilled to spot a smuggling operation taking place via the gate. The warlord might be ok to spot security threats, but the hafling rogue might realise that there are a group of shady types who are moving very small vials of a potent fungus tinccture through the gate in various clever ways. This could be a drug, a poison, a component for a nasty ritual, or anything, really.

This could even have security implications- imagine if the tincture comes from the halls of a fomorian king (or whatever the local villain is), and letting it be smuggeled into the city and sold could lead to an epidemic of addiction, madness and crime.

A good angle here is motive. Why does this kid want power? Does he want it for greater motives, or is he just looking for an edge in a gang war? Is lear ok with that? What if the kid, having carefuly been taught dangerous magics by their master, then turns around and teaches the same magics to their whole gang, in a haphazard and extremly dangerous matter? What if this leads to a magical arms race amongst the local gangs?

4) Zahar, a drow/eladrin half-breed (mechanically Shadar-Kai) Bard, has decided he wants to be king. Most of the half-breeds in the eladrin city are aware of Zahar (approximately 30% are half-breeds right now - basically, Eladrin & Drow are the same race, and half-breeds are those who remain politically neutral in the Twilight Court). Zahar's player is going to get back to me with his political scheme, so any general ideas here would be helpful, but I can't provide specific information yet.
This is hard to figure without more info on how these factions work.
How is this status determined? What if there was a large group within the city, who in theory were eladrin or drow, but in paratice, actually acted more like neutrals? Zahar could persuade them, or even trick them into being recognised as half breeds. Imagine if a group of eladrin were labeled as halfbreeds due to some busienss agreement they made (or perhaps zahar's naipulations), and then felt they had no choice but to back him, in order to ensure that they were protected from possibly repercussions of their change in status?

5) Kirra, a drow rogue with ties to the drow royal family, is going to talk to the Drow princess (and next in line to be Drow Queen). Kirra's goal is to convince the Queen to marry Zahar. This should be interesting - any feedback on how to do THAT would be greatlpy appreciated.
Again, this really comes back to the way these factions and titles relate to one another. What kind of obligations do these groups have? How well do they relate to one another? Who stands to win and lose in such a union?

Ok so obviously, the master stroke here would be to engineer the creation of a new race, that would accept this zahar guy as their leader. They could even end up incorperating his name into the name of the race, I mean calling a race 'the Zahar' sounds pretty cool, or some deritvitive therof.

If Zahar wants to really shake things up, he needs to figure out a way to alter the political landscape in a way that gives rise to a new faction, in a manner dramtic enough to create a new identity, a new race, in a very short time period. This could be based on the halfbreeds, but go beyond, them, allowing them to join with others and form a new, dynamic force in the city.

Imagine for instance if he created a new philosophy, part performance art, part political movement, that appealled in different ways to differennt races. This 'zaharism' could be designed for this task, perhaps with the help of various bizzare and supernatural advisors- he could travel to the astral plane seeking sages who specialise in the study of ascendant truths. He could journey deep into the feywild, to find a muse that can inspire him to stir the hearts of the peoples of the city.

This process would be idealistic- seeking out actual truths- or it could be cynical- seeking out a perfect propaganda tool to shape a new majority. It could even be a bit of both. Imagine Zahar traveling to the Bright City of Hestavar to meet with the lorekeepers of ioun and other worthy types, but then later, sneaking into the nine hells to seek counsel from the master manipulators of the devil-realm.

Reading more, it sounsd like things are quite chaotic in the city, but that is a perefct time for a new populist movement to spring up. If this movmenet became the new rage, a larger race then the eladrin, then they could sieze the right of kingship from the eladrin.

Dude. You just BLEW MY MIND. This is something that is a) totally doable and b) absolutely AWESOME.

This is why I post threads like this. Seriously, this is definitely, OBVIOUSLY the direction I should be pushing Zahar's subplot. And yet, I never would have thought of it.

Seriously, I've received so many awesome ideas like that from everyone here. I've got ideas for every PC to have a decent subplot now! Woot!
 

Also, how much of a bard is he? If he's really bardy, this new movement could literally be based around a song, the song of zahar, that is part philosophy and part performance, and of course, part magic. Creating and writing the song would be the quest, and it might have several, increasingly powerful versions as the quest goes on. Early on, it's more of an anthem, but as the pcs progress, the song takes on magical qualties.

OTOH, he could go more of an orator/visionary route, or a mix of approaches. Obviously you know best what kind of themes and complexity and concepts are going to work for your players. I certainly think seeking out sages and muses is a good angle, would make for a lot of travel, adventuring, various challenges along the way, ect, ect.

And if you wanted to add in a faustian component, you could later reveal that the drow villain you mentioned was turning drow into abominations because he, too was trying to create a new race. Do the PCs dare to study his methods, or will they seek a better path? OTOH it might be cooler if the idea of a deliberatly created new race was a completly original idea.
 

The real trick- after introducing the various subplots- is tying them together into a coherent storyline.

Are the zahari ultimately a good thing or bad in the world?

What will Seahorse get from continued association with the smugglers...especially as she rises in the ranks?

Ultimately, what will emerge from the maze? Or what will happen within it's confines?*

Will the caster & his apprentice continue to work well together towards some sinister goal, or will they turn against each other**, or will one/both of them be reformed (any of those to serve the ends of another party member)?

All these questions- and more- will be answered on the next episode of...Soap!
