Yep, 3 temp HP won't get you back up on your feet when you were at -2 HP.

Very true but it still might be useful if you get hit by an AOE while laying there bleeding (well making death saves).

I don't think frankthedm was commenting on the usefulness of Temp Hit Points... he was giving an example of how Temp Hit Points are not like regular Hit Points... despite them both having 'Hit Points' in the name.
