Magic's system...for magic system

Just throwing this out there:

What would you guys think of an RPG that essentially used Magic cards for the magic system...or to put it a different way, what about making M:tG into M:tRPG?

Spells would require mana, including typed mana. How much & what kind of mana your PC could access & channel would be determined by class & level.

Obviously, it would require more than just breaking open the packs and using what you find, but...we're a smart bunch...with lots of cards, I suspect.

Thoughts?

Concerning that other thing...
I'm actually surprised that WotC haven't already published the Magic: The Gathering RPG. I expected it years ago. They could just publish the basic, core book and sit back to see how well it sells.

PCs would get base mana by class:

Wizards would get Red, Blue or Black; druids Green, Clerics White or black...perhaps 3 per level?

Paladins would get White & colorless, Rangers Green & colorless, Thieves & warriors get colorless & one other color of choice...perhaps 2 per level.

Spell types would vary by class, with "casters" having access to all spells, while non-casters might only have creature enchantments or self-buffs.

And allies could lend their mana to each other!

Hmmm, maybe race provides an additional point of typed mana:

Elf 1G
Dwarf 1R
Human 2 colorless OR 1 mana of choice
Orc 1Bk
Gnome 1Bl
Halfling ?

Yeah, still inchoate at this point.

Well, I can think of few ideas why not to:

-When they were making the cards they didn't consider if they would be ''balanced'' or ''fair'' or ''possible'' for an rpg (card games are based on luck, so all these are irrelevant). So its easier to make a new rpg with new cards than transforming one game to an other (But if you keep the ''randomness'' factor in the RPG too this is no problem).

-A new rpg also sells more/new cards (everyone has enough M:tG cards already)

-Maybe it will become known to all those who play M:tG, but it is not safe to assume that they will be interested in playing too

On the other hand, M:tRPG would be interesting (but I wouldn't try it if I needed to buy tons of cards in addition to books o.0 )

Is it legal for someone to create such a system by himself?

I'm thinking of this with M:tG as kind of a thought experiment/viable house game, not as a commercial product out of the gate. Its a mental trial run of sorts.

If it works overall- IOW, if its fun and it works- and I wanted to make it into a commercial game, I'd start from ground zero: new cards representing the spells for each class. The reason is that the M:tG spells targets would need work, there's no "tapping for mana", and so forth.

Legally, I think I'm in OK territory. Unlike the martial arts CCG that ripped off M:tG, there would be different rules, mechanics & terminology.

Actually, something like this already exists as a MMO - Wizard 101. With a little work, I could see it being done with Magic, though summoning monsters might need to be tweaked somehow.

not my thing

using mana instead of vancian magic... sure.
using mtg colours as magic schools/types... why not.
using magic cards as spells... bzzzt!

there are already enough rpgs with gamist powers as it is.

The rules should state that whenever a monster attacks a PC it does so by running sideways at it.

Every PC has exactly 20 hit points.

And starts with one acre of "basic" land.

I could go on, but perhaps this is only funny to me because I'm so tired. :p
