1st Edition Suggestions

Salasis

First Post
I realize now the futility of this thread. This is my last shot at staying in a group of friends i've been playing with for about 4 years. We play first edition and really all of the problems are based in the fact that our dm LOVES his first edition and has been playing it for a million years.
The kind of character i like to play is a jack of all trades. I like playing a character who is useful in any situation. maybe i don't have the perfect spell or ability but i have something that will work. Unfortunatly the only Jack of all trades class (that i see) is a druid and our dm hates druids. Also druid spells mostly are useless (our dm doesn't allow synergy like wall of thorns and entangle to have it hold and do thorn dmg).
I hope someone here has a suggestion for me so i can enjoy playing with my friends.

Play a bard? Does your DM allow this class?

Several in 1e to choose from at least. Even the 2e bard can be used.

The Dragon#56 has an interesting and useable bard, in an article written by Jeffery Goelz: "Singing a Different Tune--A Different Bard, Not Quite So Hard".

The bard here draws from the Welsh tradition more than the Celtic, and the xp table is a little wonky vis. PHB classes, but the class works well. We've used it. I prefer it to the 2nd edition AD&D version.

I believe the article was reprinted in Best of the Dragon vol. III, as well.

Hope that helps.

He does allow this class but their is already a bard in the group. I can't remember does bard start as a fighter or a theif?

I'll try to find it. thank you. if you have a link that would be amazing. i know in the past he has allowed things from dragon magazine so this might be exatly what i'm looking for. thakn you again

I think there is also a Jester class somewhere that is jack of all trades like, even if the name Jester does not sound appealing. :)

Your DM needs to get off his high horse and loosen up.

You need to expand your horizons.

You both need to talk TO each other, not AT each other and do some negotiating. This should NOT be an all-or-nothing, my-way-or-the-highway imperative - FOR EITHER OF YOU. But that's just me.

Jack of All Trade (JoT) character types depends a bit on the campaign in 1e. It's not a strength of the system.

Bards are strong JoTs once you get through the Fighter and Thief sections (around 9th level for a single classed character) though you end up with a lot more training down time and cash loss.

Half-Eleven Cleric/Magic-users and Cleric/Fighter/Magic-User or Elven Fighter/Magic-User/Thief are both start as pretty strong JoTs until you start hitting the level caps. That's pretty quick as a Half-Elf and a bit later as an Elf.
