The tragedy of dice collecting

I love shopping for dice. I love looking at new designs. I like looking at colors, either singly or in juxtaposition with other dice; truly, there are few sights as magnificent as a well-stocked dice display. I want to buy dice all the time.

Unfortunately, I don't really get to buy dice anymore. I have too many. I have gone way past "more dice than you need for all your friends to play a game at the same time." It's actually gotten to the point where there is little new to buy. At this point I have representatives of a huge number of colors and styles. Gold letters on green marble? Got 'em. White letters on blue crystal? Check. Illegibile rune dice? One set, just for kicks.

I'm the opposite. I have a tiny collection of dice - one of each type, but three d6s and two d20s and two d10s. Never had the urge to collect them, though I could probably use another set or two for larger sets of rolls.

Same here. I have a small collection of dice: a d20, a d12, 2 d10, a d8, 3 d6, and a d4. My group is pretty evenly split between those who have big bags of dice and those who have only a small collection; and one guy who has a dice rolling application on his iphone. Which, for some reason, seems to take longer than rolling dice and adding. :p

Don't worry pawsplay, unlike Morrus and Jacob I'm with you ;). Well, my dice collection isn't huge but I probably have at least a dozen of each die type, mainly fancy Chessex stuff but also one or two other kinds, including a set Dwarven Stones, Elvish dice, a pewter set, etc. I tend to buy a new set a few times a year, or rather I binge on 2-3 sets once or twice a year (I've lost some dice - I've got a five and two year old, and I made the mistake of lending out my "crap bag" to a bunch of high school students...bad move).

Dice are fun. Dice are good. Dice are the core essence of D&D ;)

I have a large amount of dice but I'm not a dice collector. Mostly because I do like a variety in my dice. What got me started on having a large amount (roughly about two hundred dice) is games that used large dice pools.

I have six Chessex sets, alone, of d4, 3d6,d8,d10,d12,d20, and d%.

Used to live in the Baltimore area and would visit "The Armory" way too often... I have more dice than I need, I have given away dice and still have more than I need. I have lost dice and had them stolen and I still have more than I need....

My name is Thunderfoot...and I'm a dice-a-holic. :(

I used to collect them. I worked for a local game store about 20 years ago, and would frequently purchase new sets that I found to my liking.

After that store closed down, I slowed down my purchases. I found that I would use 2-3 "lucky" sets during gaming, and would eventually lose one of those dice from the set. Being a completest, I would "retire" that set to be replaced by one of the newer sets.

Like the OP, I have basically stopped purchasing dice (having a family and house and car to pay off, I find discretionary spending greatly reduced), but I do occasionally find myself looking over new sets at a gaming store or convention. :D

Over the years, I have collected so many dice that I keep a crown-royal sized bag stocked with each type of die (one bag for d4s, one bag for d6s and so on). I also have a "treasure chest" filled with about 30 sets of chessex dice for newcomers or those who forget their dice. These sets are built from the fact that when I go to our local yearly Con, I always buy a new set to play with at the Con (They're my 'little happy' I get on Friday Night before I splurge in the dealer's room on Sunday). Finally, I keep my own set of "killer DM" dice and a "player set" for myself.

I generally have so many dice these days that I only buy the unusual ones any more - generally the 6-sided dice with odd or unusual symbols or occasionally dice with an 'unusual' number of sides (like the d16 I got a year or two ago).

I have, but do not care to claim, a large pool of mostly unused Dragon Dice (trying to find a good use for them in a RPG).
