The tragedy of dice collecting

While I'm nit in the same league as the ENWorld member whose collection is infamous- Dice4Hire, isn't it?- I'm no slouch. I don't know how many I have.

Inspired by Alan Hench who used to host games in Austin, a good portion of my collection is in a hexagonal candy jar I picked up at The Container Store. The jar resides in the center of the table of my man-cave, there for the use of gamers who don't own or who have forgotten their own dice.

I have another jar that is slowly filling up.

Then there are the 4 large dice bags- all filled to the limit- which are the ones I play/travel with.

I even have a 5th bag full of only d6s for use with games that only use d6s.

I'm Dannyalcatraz, and I'm a diceaholic.

I only buy blue dice. Well... I have some pearl dice, and a couple of black d20's, but overall - blue.

This started waaaaay back in the day when I played at a game shop and purchased my first set of dice. I bought blue, another player bought red, etc... and I just never changed the habit. My original set is Gamescience, and they're nearly 35 years old at this point, I think. At least 30.

Nonetheless, I can fill a crown royal bag brimful. And I'm one of the less prolific collectors at our table.

I have many dice, but there are very few that I really have any strong attachment to. One of those dice, however, is about over the hill and I've had difficulty trying to ID and replace it, so, just in case this sounds familiar:

The die I'm looking for is a plastic d20 coated with bronze metal, and with black numbers. I probably bought it c. 1987. I think it's a Chessex die, but it could be Armory or others. THe only pics I've found that are close are the bronze and iron dice @ Joe Barbercheck's DM COLLECTION but they seem a bit darker in hue to me, than my die is. Anyone have ideas?

I have a couple spare cigar boxes full of dice as well. Some are the original nice I had in the 80's and I have a couple of brushed steel d20s (I like those!). But I have all kinds. I like the simple ones the best. Opaque solid colors. No marbling or glitter. Of course my gal just goes to the game store once a year and they tell her to buy dice, so she buys the shiny sparkly stuff with runes and elvish script and whatnot. I appreciate the gifts, but I can't use them at the table. And so the collection grows...
On side note, years of reading KODT made me leery of letting anyone touch my dice at the table. I'm thinking of bringing a separate bag of 2nd tier dice for those who cant find their d8...

Ah, Gamescience. I could never figure out if you were supposed to admire their gemstone dice in all their laser cut glory, or take a crayon after those translucent numbers.

I'm the opposite. I have a tiny collection of dice - one of each type, but three d6s and two d20s and two d10s. Never had the urge to collect them, though I could probably use another set or two for larger sets of rolls.
Do you just throw away dice that come in boxes or have you somehow managed to avoid every product that has them? I mean I have never bought a die and I ended up with at least a hundred of them.

It must be someone else. I may be famous or more likely infamous for a lot of things, but cannot think I am famous for dice.

My collection is pretty basic. My group has the blue set for one player, the black set for another, the red set for me, and if we find a fourth, they can use the green set, which I usually use for online games.

All are basic dice, no swirls, speckles or whatnot. I do have a few of those dice, but not a lot of them

I bought some gemini dice a while back and I like them a lot. I've gotten most of my good dice form the dice box at my FLGS, which I only visit every 2 years or so, unfortunately.

I don't think I have a famous collection. If so, everyone else's must be truely pitiful as mine is unimpressive.

I have too many dice for a single dice bag, unless it's really big. Actually, they're starting to overflow the sewing box I now use.

Recently, I purchased a set of dice which included a physical d3: a wedge, and doesn't follow the traditional "sides+1" rule of opposite faces. I also deliberately bought a set of "crystal" d4s, because traditional d4s don't "roll", and in my opinion are a dangerous and unfortunate footnote in gaming history.

Then I got some dice I didn't expect. Apparently the company was so happy for my business, they gave me a gift of 5 pipped d6s in their "toxic" design.

I want to get new people into gaming. Some of those people won't have dice of their own. If I can share my dice while they play, it makes things easier.

I'm a moderate diceaholic. I have a problem, but I work mightily to keep it under control. I've got a large dicebag filled with 10 different complete sets of dice. 8 "normal-sized" (one set is GameScience), 1 tiny set, and 1 huge set. I also have a second pocket in the dice bag filled with nothing but extra d6s and d20s. Then, in my basement, I have a second dice bag full of about 4 sets of GameScience dice that need to be inked, and sets that have lost a die here and there over the years.

I've got a small mason jar full of dice somewhere, but its mostly 6 siders. (was a WEG Star Wars guy for a while)

These days I have a Crown Royal bag....but its a small one, like for a promo/airplane sized bottle. In it is about 3 of each type of die. Thats all I need, although I recently had to buy a couple extra d20s. One of mine disappeared leaving me with 2. Now I didn't have enough d20s to be able to bench one for rolling poorly. (The joke was on me though - the new one rolled crappier than any other....rolled three 4's in a row  )

Anyway, one of my guys has a full size Crown Royal type bag, and its full enough to use as a frigging boat anchor. Never understood the need for that many dice....but whatever turns you on. At least we know the group is covered for dice.

I'm noticing that I'm developing a tendency to just use dice with bright contrasts between number and dice color....dark dice with white numbers or yellow with black numbers. I find myself squinting at some of the others, like the black with red numbers or the mottled/funky dice styles. Must be getting old.
