Just Another Road Thread

With a mighty crash, a dragon covered in a score of wounds plows into the road.

An apple cart sits alone by the side of the road. Sitting atop a pile of ruby-red apples is a singular apple that appears to be made of solid silver.

The dust in the road briefly swirls up into a miniature dust storm. One of the PCs sees within the dust an image of an old man, who winks before the entire storm settles back down.

A dead tree stands by the side of the road. From its branches dangle odd corn-husk dolls. Sitting under the tree is an ogress, a basket of corn husks at her side.

A knight seemingly made of briars and leaves stands astride a horse that seems to be fashioned of charcoaled wood. He holds a lance of iron in one hand and holds a shield made of clay in the other. Spying the characters, he challenges them to answer his riddle or face his lance.

A polar bear charges the characters from the nearby brush - in the middle of a temperate or jungle setting.

In some areas in my games, you can find "traveller's caches" of basic survival goods, usually in a stone cairn along roadways. Travellers are free to use them if needed, but are expected to replace them (either in that cairn or another). Needless to say, what you find in any given cairn is pretty random, and pretty mundane.....but occasionally life-saving!

Heh. In very dangerous areas the cache could be very strange indeed.

Have a spare dead adventurer?, leave one. Need a spare dead adventurer?, take one. :p

"You come across a recently used campfire. Someone has drawn an arcane circle around it."

"You come across another campfire. There is a protective circle drawn around it in a fashion similar to the one you saw previously."

"You find a third site with a magic circle. This one has been disrupted. The circle has scorch marks surrounding it. Adventuring gear covers the campsite, most of it burnt useless. It looks as if there was a scuffle of somekind here. Running footsteps lead away from the site."

"You see fire up ahead, and a shimmering oval of sky blue. As you get closer you notice that the ground around the fire seems to be made of glittering red handwriting. The sky blue is a portal in the middle of a campfire surrounded by the red circle of text. You can see shapes moving within the portal."

"You find a travelers cache. Opening it you find a dead traveler. There's a rusty hook protruding from the back of his head."

- The PCs come across a party of travelers lying motionless in the middle of the road. Closer inspection reveals that their packs, pouches, and purses have been cut or robbed and that they are wounded by tiny darts or needles coated with a sleep poison. A band of pixies, grippli, or gremlins ambush travelers, rob them in a cheerfully nonlethal way, then vanish into the woods. They might attack the PCs as they inspect the sleeping forms.

- (Speaking of sleeping) An enormous dire boar, bear, or wolf (or heck, a dragon) lies asleep right in the middle of the road. It could be lying on a bridge or across a mountain pass with little or no room to get around.
