On shfting and jumping

So, the rules for Jump state that you can jump as part of any action that allows you to move. Shifting is an action that allows you to move. Is it possible, then, to shift and then immediately jump? The jump itself would still provoke OAs, I assume, but I see no reason you wouldn't be able to do it. Expanding on this, can you jump as part of attacks with movement elements, such as the Barbarian's Whirling Lunge power, moving beyond the power's normal range in the process?

Shift:

Special Movement Modes: You can’t shift when using a form of movement that requires a skill check. For example, if you’re climbing or swimming, you can’t shift if you would need to make an Athletics check to use that kind of movement. You might find it useful to first shift away from an adjacent enemy, then walk or run.

Fair enough. One might argue that you're more jumping as part of shifting than shifting as part of jumping, but that's a stretch. Thank you for clearing that up.

Current jump rules, excerpted:
Long Jump: The check is usually part of a move action, but it can be part of any of the creature’s actions that involve the creature moving. [...]

Uses Movement: Count the number of squares you jump as part of your move. If you run out of movement, you fall. You can end your first move in midair if you double move.
That, combined with the shift rules mentioned above, suggests that you can't jump while shifting, and you can't normally extend your movement distance by jumping in any case.

I don't see why you can't jump while shifting.

Update (4/8/2010)
In the first line of the shaded text for Climb, High Jump, Long Jump, and Swim, replace “Part of a move action” with “The check is usually part of a move action, but it can be part of any of the creature’s actions that involve the creature moving.”

Now, Swimming and Climbing is out. They're their own form of movement. They have their own rules.

Jumping reqires a skill check adn you cant shift with a skill check, it says that pretty clearly.

But it does question: What if you are jumping or climbing as part of a power that gives you a certain number of squares? ie, move action climb 4 squares.

Jumping can't move you more than the speed of the movement action unless you have a power that says otherwise.

That doesn't say it's a shift, so it's not.

You don't, however, have to make a skill check. Because it doesn't tell you to, it just tells you to jump/climb that distance.

Perfectly legal. If a power says something like "Effect: move 4 squares" then you could as part of that movement make a jump (of up to 4 squares). There are many powers this would work with. You could also climb, swim, etc in the same way.

Not entirely clear:

You can take different move actions:

-walk
-run
-shift

all those actions have special rules and allow you to move in a certain way.

shift: move action. effect: move one square

Powers usually state if you move or shift.

This move is none of those move actions that allow you to move. It is an effect that repositions you on the battlemap.

When the power says you shift, it also can´t reference you to those type of move actions. At least from looking at the compendium, I would not rule it out by default.

On the other hand, deathjump spider were errated to jump 6 squares and don´t provoke opportunity attacks during this move, so I am probably wrong.

What if you have a Climb or Swim speed? (The standard Scout paragon path gives both at level 16, so it may come up more often now.)
