He went on a diet during the filming of King Kong. Looks like he's managed to keep the weight off. Good for him!

Glad to see they are filming it. I was a little worried they would put it off too long, and lose out on using Ian McKellan.

Oh, let's not focus on the working of the Bilbo line in as a way to be all Internety, please. :D

Wasn't trying to be internety. With all the things that have gotten in that film's way, it isn't like anyone would be surprised if Peter Jackson turned up sick as the straw that breaks the camel's back.

I don't doubt that losing that weight was a good thing for him, given the stress he must have been under recently. The last thing the guy needs is another contributor to a heart condition, or something.

How set is this casting reported at IMDb?

I wonder about Nimoy. He's certainly got the voice, but...

"In April 2010, Nimoy announced plans to retire from acting after 60 years in the movie business, citing both his advanced age and giving Zachary Quinto the opportunity to enjoy full media attention with the Spock character. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep was to be his final performance, however, in February 2011, he announced his definite plan to return to Fringe and reprise his role as William Bell."

So, we don't know how retired Nimoy is. Smaug would be voice work, such that his age would not be a major concern. And I think maybe he'd like to end on a movie of a classic work of fiction, rather than a videogame.

Any more info on the 2d movie, or how they intend to split Hobbit?

On casting:

- Who the heck is "Itaril"?

- I get the Orlando Bloom/Legolas cameo opportunity (my sister will love it, but he'd better not have a speaking role), but unless the whole thing is told as a flashback, what are Frodo and "Old Bilbo" doing in the story?

_ I'm guessing we get to see the assault on the necromancer given Christopher Lee's involvement.

- Did I miss Bard somewhere? This suggests to me the movie might split the book at the elf king's halls (assuming Smaug gets shown in a flashback, too, so Nimoy has a speaking part in part 1).
