I'm a biologist and my players have historically asked me to please stop describing flocks of birds and get to the dragons. Over the years I've come around to oblige, despite my deeply-felt need to wax prosaic about migratory patterns. There is an elusive wisdom in the truism that boring stuff is boring.

I'm posting here instead of on your blog because I also don't condone blogs. Quit it, internet!

a casual opening statement describing the morning as normal-
singing of birds in the puddle by the road as they ntake a bath,
the buzzing of a bee at the clover patch on the neighbor yard,
a flock of birds startled to flight from the forest canopy,
the thunder of hooves and the winneieing of horses followed by the clash of lances against heavy armor in the near by meadow.
crickets chirping, and in the distance of the night is the mournful calls of wolves or the distant yelping bark of coyotes.

"Giant eagles come and solve everyone's problems, THE END."[/CENTER]

I think that is true only in a limited sense. It's true that they played a huge role in the battle of the five armies but, even in the film version of LotR, they mostly helped Frodo and Sam survive the ending. Good for Frodo and Sam but not really all that crucial to the actual outcome of the conflict.

You don't need statblocks for sparrows to include them in the game milieu. If the game milieu includes wolves, though, they probably need stats. And I don't mean just horridhowl icewolves, either.

If the wolves are bitey, sure. Wolves tend to get bitey in fantasy games. It's a meme. ;)

If the wolves are doing what the sparrows are doing, though (hanging out, bein' animals, not botherin' nobody), you probably don't need stats for them.

Either way, it's a good idea for DMs to describe boring wolves every once in a while. "You hear wolves howling in the distance" is always a way to get wilderness characters excited/creep folks out/whatever.

I'm planning on throwing my group to the the wolves in a few hours, though I didn't plan on giving them a whole lot of advanced wolfy warning. 'Cuz of this thread, I probably will!
