Which Gadget?

Assuming a budget of about $400 which gadget would you say is the most useful at the table, I have a nook presently so I am looking at iPad, or and Android Tablet, Netbook or full blown Notebook. What is your fave and Why?

There is probably no one on these boards more Apple-phillic than I am.

And for $400, I would NOT buy an iPad. Those seriously get better as you increase your budget.

That said, currently, I'm using my top of the line iPod Touch at the table. I have my D&D characters entered into the Notebook App, mainly because I'm a cheap, lazy bastard who hasn't gone out and gotten a more powerful app. Because of what it is, to use online resources, I would have to have access to a WiFi network. And if the online resource is DDI, I can't access that at all on an iPod Touch (AFAIK).

So my guess is that at that price, you're probably best off with a netbook of some kind, or possibly a refurbished laptop.

I was thinking the netbook would be the way to go as well, not needing to rely on an app to interact with ddi and all. I was actually shocked to see some decent laptops at Bestbuy for around $350 so I may go that route. thanks for the input!

OK I'm not sure I follow you here: are you saying you don't need to access with DDI at the table? If this is the case, what exactly do you need the device to do?

No, from what I've seen you would need a third party app to access only parts of ddi with an iPad, where as a notebook or netbook would allow me to use dii directly and access all of the features.

I am going to add my two coppers here and say that if you do go the netbook route, speaking from personal experience, the 10" models with their 1024x600 screens are TOO DAMN SMALL!

I would go for a 11.6 or 12 incher with a higher resolution screen (1366 x 768), and in that form factor you can get a decent little machine for your 400$

I recommend the dell Duo (priced here at $440): Dell Inspiron duo Atom Dual-Core N550 1.5GHz 2GB 320GB 10.1" Touchscreen Convertible Tablet Win7 Home Premium w/Webcam Dell INSPIRON duo

False. There is a free app called Compendium, but you can access all ddi material as you would normally from the native browser (safari) at the usual website. Wizards even fixed the mobile-optimized version of the site they screwed up a month or two ago, which is particularly legible on small screens (and also categorizes search results better than the regular site). So the iPad has full and complete access to the ddi.
