Getting my younger children involved in RPG

I wrote rpgkids for my daughter, who was 4 at the time. It may work for younger kids, and as a previous poster said, it's easily reskinnable to another genre.

I found that once i let my daughter dictate where the story was going, she enjoued it a lot more, fwiw.

Time. All it takes is time. Keep them at the table long enough, and suddenly take them away from the game-table and all they'll be able to think about it getting back in.

People are people, kids are are kids. But kids are [little] people too, and their psychological works ain't too different from us big folks. Just don't suggest for a moment that they like it in spite of themselves, and don't talk down to them. Bring them to your level. If you don't think they are, they are likely playing with you already. :)

One of the issues with keeping the youngers' attention is that they are used to games and entertainment with a strong visual element (i.e. video games, movies, etc.) Technology does not yet permit one to whip up within seconds an appropriate animation that fits a dramatic combat scene, so we have to provide visual stimulus in others ways. I'll always offer the included illustration of a monster for my players to view and this seems to work more effectively with the younger players--the older players like to see them too but they have more visualization experience.
