Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Yeah - despite all the usual nerd rage and condemnation before having actually seen it out there, it was surprisingly a very good movie. And I'm speaking as someone who had a Planet of the Apes lunchbox, wastepaper basket and all the Mego action figures when he was six! B-)

It was a great movie and they set a nice foundation for a series. Crossing my fingers for a sequel.

Agreed, great movie. I personally don't need a sequel for this. Planet of the Apes with Heston is the sequal for me. That said, if they do a re-image of Planet of the Apes, I'll go to the movie theater to see it. This prequel was just that good.

Wow.

Talk about a surprise and a shock all in one.

I entered this thinking it'll be at the very least entertaining even if a bit silly and walked out thinking it was a very enjoyable and well-made movie.

If you're a fan of the original (Planet of the Apes, not Conquer), you'll note (whether or not you enjoy them is another matter entirely) a LOT of homages to it. Lots of them are subtle though and you'd miss them if you hadn't seen the original like a thousand times.

Let's see, they've got spears and such. We've got modern weapons, opposable thumbs, and outnumber them by two or three hundred million to one. Nope, not buying it.

Did you bother to stick around and watch the post-credits scene? The movie kind of explains what happens.

Just saw it and was pleasantly surprised that I really enjoyed it. Like jaerdaph, I had the lunchbox and action figures as a kid, so I didn't have high hopes for this- especially after the last reboot. But they did a good job on this one. And they made a better origin story than the originals...

This was my big stumbling block with both this and the originals. Intelligent apes are one thing, they may be smart, strong, and agile- but we massively outnumber them AND we have high-tech weapons, organized armies, etc... So intelligent or not, how do they rise while we fall? I think this movie covered both aspects of that quite well....
[sblock=speculation]Though it's not shown or implied, I imagine as the virus spreads to wherever more apes are it will make them smart as well, quickly making them the dominant species to replace us. Pretty slick writing that.[/sblock]

[sblock=Spoiler]Airborne, highly contagious, cross-species... everything a good apocalyptic virus needs to wipe out humanity.[/sblock]
