I dunno. I simply have no desire to watch any of them. I remember doing a Rambo movie marathon with my cousins some 20-odd years ago (before I moved to NZ). They were pretty cheesy. I think I'm not much of a Sylvester Stallone fan.

Did you watch First Blood?

I think Rocky and First Blood are both movies that are pretty low on the cheese factor (Rocky especially). The other films in both series get cheesy but First Blood, for all its wild action, is about a Vietnam vet who is broken by his experience in the war, and who feels rejected by the society that sent him. Rocky, as Morrus pointed out, is more of a character study, and not particularly cheesy. Different strokes though. If you don't like them, you don't like them

I do enjoy a lot of older movies. This conversation started because I wondered whether 70s-era sci-fi movies like Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Alien would be more enjoyable if one were high in the 70s. I wouldn't know because a) I wasn't alive in the 70s and b) I've never taken any mind-altering drugs.

2001 is definitely not a movie that requires being high to enjoy. I mean you can enjoy it that way, many have done so, but it is considered a very significant film by plenty of people who never smoked pot, took a shroom or LCD.

Also I was born in the 70s but didn't see 2001 until the late 80s maybe (I had heard about it though because those films still had cultural potency: I do remember seeing a lot of 1970s movies on TV for instance). I don't think it is a movie that requires having been in the 60s or 70s to enjoy. It is a somewhat divisive film though. People either seem to really like it or really not like it.

Alien I think is just considered a classic pretty uniformly by most people. Which doesn't mean you have to like it at all. But it is one of the few movies I rarely hear people complain about

By the way, I've never seen any of the Rocky films, and I grew up in Philadelphia. The genre never interested me. 🤷‍♀️

Based on what you have said I don't think it would appeal to you. But it culturally significant enough that I would always recommend people at least give it one viewing to decide for themselves

Well, that was fun

OK. That's fine. I'm not asking for people to agree with me. Just sharing my opinion. I'm used to being the odd one out.
The implication that we needed to have taken mind-altering drugs was the bit where you went beyond 'sharing your opinion'.

Sure. So don't. 🤷
  • I did not enjoy The Terminator
I mean, you basically don't like a couple of entire decades of films. That's fine. I don't think we need to list them all though?

The thread has basically become the 'pukunui lists all the 70s/80s films' thread. It's OK. You don't like films made in the 70s. That does not make them all bad films.

The real litmus test is how you feel about Alien: Resurrection and Alien vs. Predator: Requiem.
Enjoyed both :) Not as good as original 2 Alien movies / Predator movies (not even close) but fun to watch, I actually watched Alien: Resurrection 2 or 3 times at the cinema as really enjoyed it, far more than Alien 3 (really don't like Alien 3 - when going through the movies with my teenage daughter, skipped Alien 3 in the end as just couldn't watch it again).
Alien vs Predator : Requiem I just watch for silly fun, as not a serious movie and can't take seriously against the overall movie canon as such.

Yes, but I don't remember it as well as the second one that was set in Afghanistan and dedicated to the pre-Taliban "freedom fighters" fighting the good fight against those dirty commies. LOL.

OK. See, I did enjoy 2001: A Space Odyssey when I was younger. Enough so that I replaced many of my computer's default sounds with clips from HAL. You know, so like instead of the default error "bing", my computer would say, "I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."

These days, though, if I were to watch it again, I'd probably want to watch it slightly sped up.

I'm also not suggesting you have to be high to enjoy it at all. I'm asking if it would be more enjoyable that way. I'm certainly not going to try it myself to find out. EDIT: I also apologize for unintentionally implying that these films weren't enjoyable if you're not high.

OK. Well, maybe I'll give it a try just so I can say I've seen it then.

EDIT: I apologize for inadvertently implying that people need to be high to enjoy certain films. That was not my intention. However, I can see how my comments could be taken that way. Mea culpa.

My purpose for making a list was to provide you with enough context so you wouldn't make a dismissive generalization like this.

To be clear, I never said I didn't like "entire decades of films". There are plenty of films from the 70s and 80s that I do like. I'd say it's more specific types of movies (a good number of which happen to come from the 70s) that I don't like.

I have not seen either film, although I did look up the maternity ward scene from the latter just to see what all the fuss was about.

The one in Afghanistan is part III if I remember. The first three films go: First Blood, Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rambo III. The last two are very different from the first one. First Blood is almost more of a 70s movie and set in the US. Rambo: First Blood Part II is him being sent on a mission in Vietnam

OK. Yeah, see I don't remember them very well at all! It's been over 20 years since I watched them. I just remember my cousins and I had a bit of a laugh while watching them. It's possible we didn't consider the first one cheesy.

For those of us who were alive in the 70s, the idea that we were all taking mind-altering drugs is an offensive caricature.
