Loot protection spells?

It occurs to me that you could have someone, or pay someone, to cast contingency/teleport on the sword. Something like "If anyone other than [character] is in possession of this sword for longer than 2 rounds, then teleport the sword to [character]'s hand."

Though I'm not really sure if that would be resource-wise worth it, as it would be a one-shot you'd have to cast again. But then again, how many times does a particular sword ever get stolen?

Edit: the more I think about this, the more problems there are. You'd need to trust the mage who cast it, there are better uses for a contingency, it's expensive for the use, etc.

When I first read the topic title, I thought it said Lord Protection Spells, and I was thinking to myself, "A Rolemaster discussion on EnWorld, that doesn't happen too often."

I must have played too much Rolemaster back in the day.

I like the contingency/teleport idea, and especially to add to the paranoia of my gamers... The sword is pretty much a super high/lucky roll that I made to "randomly" create a magic item, and it turned out very very well for the PC. I love it, and now, the dude pretty much guards it with his life. He had a sheath made for it and wouldn't leave the blacksmith out of sight, and now I am trying to figure out some ways for the sword to "disappear". Maybe a plane shift of sorts, but it's going to be difficult, the PC is very, very, very protective of this new sword.

Disappear? Hardly. It just needs to start whispering to him in his dreams.

VERY nice! Haha just completed another session. They get into combat with about 12 undead, one of them a Mohrg. The rogue with the uber sword crit fails, pulls a card and deafens himself, then the Mohrg paralyzes him for the remaining combat. Two hour battle ensues and he barely makes it out alive, if it wasn't for the consecration spell cast on the ground he probably would have been Mohrg food / undead now. Hahaha. Good times.

Get a locked gauntlet. Rust the chains and metal parts of it so they creak LOUDLY when attaching or unattaching the weapon. Sleep with the sword in your locked gauntlet.
