D&D 3E/3.5 3.5e 5-10th level campaign & fighter mage

Well, I have once "graduated" from 3.5e but likely to play a campaign again as a player within some months.

That campaign will likely to start at 5th level and likely to go as far as 10-12th level.

Now, I am thinking of playing some fighter-mage type, who can bash the enemy with his weapon and can hurl some spells from distance.

Now, thinking about the level-range, Duskblade seems to be a natural choice. Then, single-class cleric could be another option.

But I have already seen too many of them in action during years of DMing 3.5e.

Now, it is better if I can have some change and my PC can be effective and versatile. He does not need to be mini-maxed but should be at least capable from the beginning (5th level) to the last (10-12th level).

Do you have some nice idea?

Most people that I play with would probably say that I'm a terrible character builder, but I kinda dig the battle sorcerer alternate class feature from the UEA. You get a d8, can wear light armor, gain proficiency with a single martial weapon, and in return, you cast one less spell per day and know one less spell per level. Couple that with the improved familiar feat from complete warrior and you might have yourself a character that'll do what you're looking for.

Paladin2/Sorcerer4/Spellsword1/Abjurant Champion 5/Sacred Exorcist8

errr...

Not interjecting too much but he said 5-10 level...you listed a 20 level build there....

Maybe I'm missing something with congruent levels there or something in your 10 level build?

12th level: Duskblade 2/Spellthief 6/Suel Arcanamach1/Abj Champ 2/Green 1 (Str boost is decent)

Starting at 5th: Duskblade 2/Spellthief 3 will be fine. You can even steal spells from others. You have Sneak attack (for flanking or 1st turn in Init) wielding a Greatsword or sword/shield.
When you gain Suel, you use Abj Camp levels to advance Suel's casting.

An "AeshKrau" Illumian gets bonus spells of all Classes based on Str Mod.

If Divine is okay:
Build 12th: Pally 2/Bard 1/Pally 2/Bard 1/Pally 1/Incandescent Champion 3/
Feats:
1) power attack, sapphire smite
2) 3rd- devoted performer (multiclass freely with Bard/Paladin)
3) 6th- snowflake war dance (Cha to damage)
4) 9th- divine soul touch
5) 12- divine might
Paladin of Freedom from D20 SRD is decent choice.
You have to use Incarnum so this build requires you are okay with taking the Blue pill.
At 5th level: you are a total Paladin 4/Bard 1, but took levels as Pal 2/Bard/Pal 2.
You don't have a lot of spells mind you, but you have decent synergy.

#3 choice:
Build: Mystic Ranger 10/Suel Arcanamach 2
Lv 5 Mystic Ranger is fine

Choice 4:
Duskblade 5 at lv 5, at level 12: Duskblade 5/Abj Champ 5/Dusblade 2.

Choice 5: If you want Mystic Thuerge
Duskblade 5/Cleric 3 / Mystic Theurge 4

Choice 6:
Warmage 5/ Duskblade 5/ Spellsword 1
Level 5, as Warmage. Next level you can channel as Dusbklade 1.

Whatever your class setup (personally, I'd aim for Psychic Warrior X/ Wizard 3/ Monk 2), you should invest in the Practiced Spellcaster feat to artificially raise your Caster Level.
