4/9 for me. Looks like I have some reading to do.

That said, while I think it's good to see the DMG honoured in this way, I'm not actually sure I can recommend it to gamers, never mind to non-gamer geeks.

I was 5 out of nine: DMG 1E, Snow Crash, Hitchiker's Guide, Ender's Game, Lord of the Rings. I started Neuromancer but just couldn't get into it.

Like others I would swap out a few for sure. Godel, Escher, Bach seems like an odd one for the list. Haven't read it, so it may be great, I just don't associate it strongly with "geek culture". The The Visual Display of Quantitative Information also appears an odd one on the list (again could be great, but I can think of so many more books that play a bigger role). Kind of question Snowcrash being on the list. I remember it being big when it came out, but these days I don't see too many gamers who read it.

It's 6/9 for me. Havent read Godel, Escher, Bach (or even heard of it actually). I also haven't read Visual Display of Quantatative Information (though that one I have heard of before.) And Ender's Game is one I haven't read.

DMG, Hitchiker's Guide, Lord of the Rings, Neuromancer all very nice, but where is Dune?!

At the college where I worked and still take an occasional class, I was surprised to find that a dozen or so students in their late teens to early twenties with whom I have become friends had read Dune and made reference to it on their Facebook page. Add to that number, the number of their friends that I don't know, that knew the source of the reference and I was more amazed considering the community demographics are not one people would, typically, associate with the reading of Dune, Hitchiker's, etc. based upon ethnic and social economic background. and stereotypes.

7 of 9 and the local library has the other two.

I would just like to say that I am glad Harry Potter is not on the list. It's perfectly fine for what it is: a kids book--not an "essential book for geeks" IMHO. B-)

Seriously, no Philip K. Dick, H.P. Lovecraft or Robert E. Howard? Two cyberpunk novels and Tolkien but not "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" at least?

No one has even heard of the visual information book, meanwhile these guys have inspired or created entire genres. Not sure if I can agree with that list.

Hear, hear! Most people think of those campy movies when they think of Conan, but the stories were way better--and his Solomon Kane and El Borak tales should also be required reading for any RPG'er. Lovecraft too.

I've read 7 of 9. I don't know why the DMG is on the list though unless they are assuming that all geeks play 1e D&D which seems odd.

I think they're saying the 1e DMG transcends the game for which it was written and is entertainment even for those who've never played D&D. And if so, they're right.
