Have you ever played Amber?

When I was first really getting into gaming in the late '90's, a handful of people in our campus gaming club played Amber, and were apparently fans of the novels.

I didn't know what the novels were, or really anything about them aside from various cryptic inside jokes this clique made amongst themselves.

They invited me to join in a campaign they were starting. It was culture shock to an extreme degree, from character creation to the actual game. I wasn't there for a second session, they were cool people to hang out with, but definitely not a game for somebody who is not a big fan of the books. The setting load to absorb if you're not a Zelazny fan is vast. The culture gap with how unconventional the diceless game is compared to typical RPGs is also a big jump.

The people I knew who were big fans, that little clique, seemed to really groove on it. Anybody who wasn't a pretty devoted fan though was completely lost.

No, but neither have I read the Zelazny books. I'm sure I'm missing something by not having read the books or played the game, but my to-read and to-play lists get longer by the year which means it's increasingly unlikely that I'll ever get to them.

You really ought to promote those books (at least the first series) to the top, or near to it. They are holy-crap level awesome.

Dunno, I actually like second series more. Character from first book is kinda boring IMO. Like both, but after couple of readings second series becomes better for me.

Read the books -BTW, there is an omnibus edition out- but was never attracted to the RPG. Heck, I only saw it on shelves a mere handful of times, and never even gamed with anyone who owned it.

i have the rulebook, the first sourcebook and a gorgeous (not gaming related) visual Guide to Amber and am dying ti give it a try but i never find someone who is interested in giving it a try...

It is one of the few games I've gotten to play instead of run, but it was well over 14 years ago. All I remember is that with a creative mind, the Logrus (sp?) is really abusive.

We made characters once, but that was as far as we got.

I think we figured out how to "power game" character creation -- cooperate. We worked out what everyone wanted and rigged the bidding so we could all get what we wanted and still afford pattern walking and other goodies.

Maybe 18 years ago, I had read the books and then got the RPG and we made PCs and played a couple sessions, but that's it.

But I'm now in a PBP over at RPGG that just started. So I'm in the midst of re-reading both the novels and the RPG. Looks like a good medium to play the game.
