A mini-rant re: Pathfinder and D&D

If asked, I say I'm playing Pathfinder. If the asker doesn't know what that is, then I say it's like D & D.

Using the unqualified term D & D, denotes to me, the current edition of the game as presented by WotC.

And for me, 4e, being the current edition, is not D & D - it's something else just using that name. So, if referring to it, I will always call it as 4th Edition.

I used to have a Maine Coon... you would not believe the many and varied descriptions of how the breed came to be... up to and including both bobcats and Mary Antoinette.

I had a couple of Maine Coon runts myself- a mere yard long (nose to tail-tip), and only 18lbs for the biggun. Their dad was 25lbs, and Grandpa was a (fluffy, round) 35 pounder.

According to what I heard from the owner of Heidi Ho cats, they were bred to be big, hairy, water friendly cats for use taking down rats on Maine sea vessels- all the better to take down big ship rats and avoid being tossed overboard by waves.

I thought the technical term for almost all dog crossbreeds was "mutt"?

He's probably referring to dog + other canine mixes.

I used to know a FLGS owner in San Antonio who bred Akitas with Timber wolves. The puppies were cuuuute...and had saucer-sized paws by the time they were old enough for adoption.

There is somebody up in the Rangely Lakes region of Maine that breeds wolf-dogs.

I have met two of them, and heard of a third. Big paws, a lean and hungry look, and... dippy.

Mina (one of the wolf-dogs) is terrified of cats because a Maine Coon batted it across the nose when Mina licked it.

Sweet, sweet critter. Scared of cats and lightning. And at 75 lbs. tries to climb in your lap....

The Auld Grump, named after Mina Harker, should have been named after Gracie Allen.

I have no problems with people saying 1E, 2E, Skills and Powers, 3.5, 3.0, 3.x,, Pathfinder 4E, C&C Iron Heroes, Savage Worlds or any of those.

D&D used as either a catchall term for fantasy roleplaying or Wizard's (TSR's) product line is fine.

But when people say any of those are 'not D&D to me' I think they have an axe to grind and are saying that to cause arguments or divisions.

I know D&D is not defined well, but most honestly should be WOTC's or TSR's product line. It is their trademark, after all.

But for non RPGers, I will say Dungeons and Dragons to mean most any FRPG, and sometimes Sci-fi or superhero games, if the person REALLY knows nothing about RPGs. :)

I have heard enough people that like 4e say it that I would not get too irritated about it, if I were you.

That said, I was tickled pink a few months ago when some kids were holding Pathfinder at the local Borders and calling it 'D & D'. They knew what it was, were talking about it quite happily and with an informed voice, but for them Pathfinder was D&D.

No one said that I have to be consistent. :p

The Auld Grump, and away! My paladin awaits!
