Interested in checking out non-D&D fantasy "old school" ttrpgs

Yeah, RM/SM are suffering a 40 year slander campaign. Character gen, however, can be a seriously intimidating prospect, especially for new players. Once familiar, however, it's not hard, just a lot of writing.

As I noted, I was never scared off by the tables, but trying to work my way through Spacemaster character gen ended up dissuading me, and that's something given my general taste in RPGs always leaned into the crunchy.

So I bought two RPGs. One of them is Dragonbane Core Set, the other is Draw Steel Heroes. Yes I'm aware that DS isn't "old school," but I've had my eye on it for a while and figured that having an "old school" and "new school" fantasy RPG to peruse would make for a good balance.

Sorry for those who recommended other RPGs. I only have so much time to read and money to spend at once, but perhaps in the future I'll get around to checking out the others.

- I.C.E's Middle Earth RPG is a classic of the era published in 1984. It uses simplified version of Rolemaster as base system. A d100 roll over system.

The Swedish translation of MERP along with the then-current version of Drakar och Demoner were my first RPGs, which I got for Christmas back when I was a little baby gamer in 1985. MERP was a little more advanced than I was capable of at the time, but it was fascinating.

Isn't Against the Darkmaster supposed to basically be the same game with the Tolkien stuff scrubbed off?
