Is it bad that, while capable of appreciating some positive PR for the hobby, I'm bothered by the fact that he doesn't know that die is the singular and dice is plural?

What's wrong with me?

I would refine this. If you're not enjoying you're time playing then there is a problem. Fun isn't always the goal. Being creeper/freaked/scared out of you're mind may not be considered fun but t shore can be enjoyable. Slight distinction but important.

Do RPGs ever get bad press? I know it used to, but I'm not sure I've ever seen a press article demonize it. I've seen some cluelessness here and there, but never talking badly off it, as such.

They only seems to get bad press when someone who plays RPGs also happens to purchase a sword and cut someone up. And rather than blame the mental state of the sword-wielder they try to lay blame on the RPGs as if there were a causal relationship and as if no one died by the sword prior to 1974.

Ask your grandmother what D&D is and then asker what world of darkness is. You'll see which system has more press.

Oh and remember the old slogan, "there's no such thing as bad publicity".
