But, more seriously, why should someone realize what's happening if they have no prior knowledge of the aeserpent? It doesn't make too much sense, unless the venom just makes them thirsty for blood, in which case you should need something more like a save to resist drinking blood rather than a check.

Yes, I was wondering how that worked. I suppose it could just down to it being magic and not needing to make much sense.

Besides, you can use Heal untrained.

I know, but that's a Wisdom-based skill.

As a compromise, I would accept giving the poisoned victim an insight bonus on their skill checks, and possibly letting them make the Knowledge check untrained...

Even magic should make some sense. ;) We don't have to make the same mistakes as the original designers (or worse yet, some editor who messed with the original design).

You could maybe convince me to go for an untrained Knowledge check, but I still prefer Heal and Knowledge as usual. Besides, I think we have you outnumbered. ;)

EDIT: What I'm trying to say is that the original designer probably picked the Int check out of a lack of better options. The use of skills in 3.X to notice things gives us more versatility and better options even without going to exception-based design.

Well the sense it make could just be "the quixotic gods thought it would be amusing". :p

Yes, I expected you staid stuck-in-the-muds would be against it.

So, are we still making the DCs different for the victim and their allies?

e.g.:

Version #1
A bloodcurse victim feels their flesh changing and devouring their own blood. If they succeed at a DC 10 [?] Heal check or Knowledge (arcana) check they realize that consuming the blood of a person untainted by bloodcurse venom will temporarily alleviated their affliction. Another creature observing the victim can discover this information with a DC 18 Heal check or Knowledge (arcana) check.

Version #2
A bloodcurse victim feels their flesh changing and devouring their own blood. If they succeed at a DC 10 [?] Heal check or Knowledge (arcana) check they realize that consuming the blood of a person untainted by bloodcurse venom will temporarily alleviated their affliction. Note that the victim can make the Knowledge (arcana) check untrained. Another creature observing the victim can discover this information with a DC 18 Heal check or Knowledge (arcana) check.
