More Mythic Dragons

Besides metallic and chromatic dragons, what dragonkin do use frequently? I'm thinking things like hydras and linnorms need more play. Have you ever tweaked the stats for a dinosaur in lieu of a standard dragon? Thoughts?

The last time I ran a Hydra, it was a TPK. It was a 12 headed Cryohydra, and the party of six were ECL14. Shouldn't have been a big problem, it was the second encounter of the day. Bad player tactics mixed with some lucky rolls.

I don't think I've ever run into that with a similar ECL dragon encounter, except when I have a rider or controller attached.

Because I enjoy Dinosaurs for what they are, Animals and therefore subject to everything Animal Handling can do, I've never tweaked a Dinosaur.

I've used Spawn of Tiamat, Planar Dragons and the oh-so-loveable Psudodragon.

I'm kind of surprised at how little press pseudodragons and hydras get in the game...
True Dat.

A Hydra is an incredible adversary, a worthy monster for any fight.

A Psudodragon is a Telepathic cat that just happens to be in the body of a Dragon. Not so much for combat, but the RP potential is incredible.

I never used the dinosaur stats, myself, though many many moons ago, I did use the stats for a giant sea serpent. Threw in a steamy (i.e. boiling!) salt water breath weapon (a la ye olde dragon turtle) and used it as a "sea dragon." It had great big frills/fins at its side to launch itself up out of the water (a bit like a flying fish) but couldn't actually "fly" or even glide any real distance out of the water, just come up out of it to crash down on the other side of ships (or a party floating in the water/among the wreckage heh heh ;). It would/could attack creatures on land, but only about 20' from the water's edge (unless it used the breath weapon).

Have had many fun times with pseudodragons! But as others have said, they're more for RPing good times.

After their appearance in the &D cartoon in the 80's fairy dragons were kind of ruined for me. But I've had them around in certain settings (a highly magical elf wood, for example) for window dressing for a short RP encounter.

The "linnorm"/flightless/serpentine dragon types I've had in an encounter here or there...but you're right, they should probably see more play time and be more easily encountered/found (and defeated) than the giant flying lizards. Usually see them as more animalistic/"dumber" dragons. No spell use...probably don't speak...but their fire breath will burn you and their claws and bites will get you just as dead, just as easily, as their more "magically adept" winged cousins.

Hydras are fun, though I haven't often used them. Always had a soft spot for behirs and dragonnes though. Have used the behir (of all homebrewed sorts, not just lightning breath/blue dragon cousins) many times.

I like land (non-flying) dragons, dinosaurs, hydras, etc.

I usually look at non-flying dragons as an encounter that the party will slay.

Flying dragons are invincible creatures of destruction that the party should flee from; if they fight, they should expect to lose at least one party member.

I've heard of a few DMs who have systems fro building unique dragons, has anyone played with that idea?
I Tried Figuring Out How To Breed Hybrid Color Dragons...

In the game where I'm playing a Factotum, we have a player who's running a Mentalist Psion. Incredible PC. This PC's down-the-road objective is to use the Power True Mind Switch to take over the body of a Black Dragon. When we get to that point, it'll be a fantastic side quest.
The above linked thread was us kicking around the idea of him acquiring a Silver Dragon as a mate, playing her as a Cohort after his levels into the Thrallherd PrC. This is our objective for "creating" a unique dragon.
