General Discussion

I think this is incredible stuff and it's opening my eyes a bit on the things that I could be improving. Thanks!

Combat description is another area that I have difficulty with. Another one of my characters, Fury, uses a rapier and is specialized with feint (to eliminate that Dex to AC and get sneak attack). I've gotten stuck on how to describe his oft-used feint/thrust routine and find myself using the same description over and over. If you all have advice or tips on keeping combat descriptions fresh, I'd appreciate hearing it.

I would research different sword styles and techniques from Asia, specifically ones that do countering. Describe your technique that such that the opponent tries to attack you, but you dodge and immediately counter. Especially if you got missed last time.

I am not sure what to tell you, GE. Maybe watch some kung fu or swashbuckling movies for research. And then try to visualize it. :hmm:

I usually quote my last post and just edit the sentences so I am not saying the same thing every time, but yet the actions are just a repeat. Swords are kind of boring, though. I like describing the flail.

You can mix it up on where you hit the opponent and the blood and gore parts.

Salvator writes some very good combat scenes in his books. As long as you don't despise Drizzt, might be worth checking out (or re-reading) a few of those novels to give you some inspiration as well.

Failing that, try Erol Flynn as Robin Hood.
Actually, Robin Hood itself, the book, has a really good fight between Robin Hood and Little John over the river with staves. There are a lot of different versions of Robin Hood, I'm afraid - mine was a giant skull-crushing tome of some kind, idk its authorship, authenticity, or age though.

I think the cover may have looked like this:
Robin_Hood.jpg

but any given green foresty place with golden sunlight looks about like any other. I feel like that's not quite the right cover, but very very similar.

Oh, come on. Robin Hood: Men In Tights HAS to be the best ever! Just slightly ahead of the Disney version.

Scarlet Pimpernell I think is another one, or the 3 Musketeers (pauses to chase down candy bar of same name) would work too. Lots of rapier work all over :D
