General Discussion

I don't know what the heck's going on, but I cannot access EnWorld from my home Internet most of the time for 2-3 days now. No other issues to my other sites. I appear to have no problem on my iPhone's 3G network. But I cannot post IC like this. Grrrr.

Welcome to iPhone exclusive world! all of my posts has switched to iPhone now (have not been on my actual computer for 3 weeks now. :( )

Yeah, Sunday it was a full site outage I think.

But this is freaking weird. Last night and tonight, the site lets me on after midnight. Fat lot of good that does me when I am at the end of my posting window.

But the whole time I am getting notifications in email that others are posting.

It's frustrating, I know. I had similar trouble for one day (last Sunday, I think), but while I could get on any other site I couldn't get to ENWorld regardless of what device I was using or from where I was using it.

Yeah - the site was down on Sunday for a bit. Before that I could view posts (though slowly), but it would not let me actually post, just spin forever thinking and thinking and thinking...

Do you know of any app better for posting from the iPhone than Safari? Formatting IC posts is terrible from Safari.

Tapatalk is the best one I have found, but it does not work nicely all the time. I have issues with coding all the colors/sblocks, although its supposed to support it. I manually write them instead.

Hey, now that I was about to start making my second character, I wanted to make a small entry on the wiki about their village to add some flavor and, of course, be available to anyone who wishes to expand from there. I have a local map ready if this gets the green light.

Whiteoak is a small village at the edge of a wood that produces fur and lumber for Tritower. It is reknowned locally for it's well kept flagstone streets, thier leatherwork and the best Chicken Pot Pie this side of the Tang River.

The village has two small plazas, the first one is outside the Council's building and the second larger one is used for festivals and gatherings.

A small river borns in a nearby hill to the south and crosses part of the village. Most of the farmland is situated in the western side of the river, while on the eastern side there's a wood know locally as The Whitehare Forest.

On the northern border, there's also a lagoon with a waterfall.

===Society===

Most people at Whiteoak are friendly to visitors but sometimes they stay away of loud or fancy cityfolk, considering them extravagant and lacking of manners. After constant trouble with goblinoid clans the villagers certainly do not welcome their kind in their lands. Gossip is maybe the favorite hobby of locals.

The town boasts 1 carpenter, 2 barbers (with a feud), 1 lawyer, 3 furriers, 1 master mason, 2 noble's vacation house, 5 shoemakers, 3 tailors, 2 taverns, 3 Woodcarvers and 4 tanners.

===Locations of note===
The Silver Fox Inn - This one is the biggest Inn in the village and its owner is a wealthy merchant from Tritower. The accommodations are good and everyday or so there's music. It is a more "friendly" place than the Old Cart Tavern. There's a half-orc, Mel, working in the kitchen that doubles as guard and kicks people out if they start trouble.

The Old Cart Tavern - Easily identified for the abandoned cart left just by the entrance. Decades ago, a merchant came to town looking to trade, took a walk in the forest and was never heard of again. No one touched the man's cart and since then the tavern took its name from it. Offers common accommodations and cheap beer. Usually attracts and older (and drunker) crowd.

soulnova,

I don't think it's a problem (with a couple of caveats); a lot of us have created bits of setting for our character's history (most of which hasn't made it onto the wiki but is still a part of the world). I do have a problem with detail for the sake of detail, however. Specifically, I don't think it is necessary to provide a list of the businesses in the town and I actually feel that such a list impedes DMs who might want to use the site. With a list such as you've provided (1 carpenter, 2 barbers, etc.) it implies those are the only businesses in the town. I would prefer that list be removed so that DMs could add to the population as they need.

And, as long as the town fits into the local geography then I think it is ok. I am curious if the river mentioned is the Tang river or some other river. That really isn't clear from the write-up.

I doubt is the Tang river, as its not very big. Maybe a river that joins Tang further to the west?

Sure, I can take away the business if that helps the DM's. I actually asked because I didn't see a "Town/village" category in the wiki (or maybe I missed it). ;)

I actually like this list (but see my final paragraph for further thoughts). Yes, this is a shared world and other GMs can use your village. However, this particular village is made by you and I believe you should have some creative control over it - size, basic makeup, etc.

GE, we've got a whole world (or at least a continent right now :D) to play with, and most of the area is going to be sparsely populated wilderness, dotted by just such little villages. While placing it in E'n does give others the right to use it in their adventures, I don't think it's unreasonable for soulnova to put in details about the village including size, composition of the businesses, etc. I wouldn't even object to seeing each business detailed with an NPC if that's what soulnova wanted to do, although that's not necessary.

But in looking at your post, GE, providing names and details of businesses rather than a simple list of how many of each type might be more to your liking - was this what you meant by "detail for the sake of detail?" I can see where the list provided is more just to fill in blanks than to provide real flavor, where actual details of the businesses listed - while being somewhat more limiting for other GMs who want to use the village - would potentially provide useful characters for plot hooks and real flavor.

I like the village. I like the details that give it a very nice feel, like the descriptive bits about what the village is known for and the detail on the inns. I don't feel a list of businesses adds to the village in any substantial way. The only thing that jumps out at me from that list is that the two barbers are feuding. It makes me want to know why*.

You're right, Mowgli, we do have an entire world to fill up. And on that scale adding one small village really doesn't make a whole lot of difference. But for me, some of the most interesting and entertaining bits of creation come from people taking something that someone else has created and adding just a bit more to it. For example, the Gabbiano ring led to Carnemorto & Umberto Gabbiano to Finia and Commander Parsons and all the connections Parsons has had through various adventures. It wouldn't have been the same if I had just created the Gabbiano family whole cloth from the beginning.

And that's how I see this village. Yes, it's created as part of soulnova's character backgrounds but it could very well lead to something more. A detailed list of businesses doesn't provide me any inspiration; that's what I meant by detail for the sake of detail.

As for adding it to the wiki, feel free to create a village or town category. It might also be useful to link the village on Tritower's page under a 'Surrounding Territories' heading or something like that.

* For the record, I don't think the feud should be detailed. It is that sort of open hook that might capture a DMs imagination and encourage him to write an adventure about it.
