Cackling Manaically at the 13 Aug Legends and Lore

Here.

In the middle of the first paragraph on wizards:

"we're also looking at spells that a wizard can regain through five minutes of rest and meditation"

Manaical laugh. Manaical laugh.

(ahem)

I must say, that sound like a great idea. Do I hear any EN-counter arguments?

I have an EN-counter argument.

The way in which the Wizard uses magic says a lot about the nature of magic in the game. It doesn't have to be the only kind of magic, but I think most people agree that the most powerful, the most game-changing and reality-warping spells end up in the hand of the mage. Preparing spells daily leads to a Wizard that justifies his intelligence score - he has to have a powerful mind to contain these spells, and it takes careful thought to prepare them.

I could envisage a class that doesn't have to do this to cast spells, let's say the Sorcerer. They are naturally infused with magical power - like monsters, they don't have to study every morning to be able to lightning bolt you later in the day. They may still be tired out by casting spells, but give them five minutes and they are ready to go again.

Of course there are at-will spells too to consider. Popular because they give the Wizard something else to do during the day. They are obviously so easy to master that lots of people can do them (indeed all High Elves and Magic Users that aren't otherwise spellcasters can do this). They are tricks, avoiding the usual exhaustion or mental exertion required of magic.

Now, I say if you give the Wizard his minor spells, his special daily spells *and* spells he can regain quickly then not only is that adjusting one's concept of how magic functions in the world (spells basically have recovery times, none of this mental preparation stuff), but it also cramps the design space for classes such as the Sorcerer or Warlock.

So please, leave the Wizard with his daily, prepared spells. Give this encounter stuff to other classes.

Encounter powers reheated in the microwave in an attempt to freshen them up isn't going to work. If thats going to be a core feature then 5E holds little interest for me.

For all we know... all these tests for the wizard are basically testing mechanics that will actually get assigned to other classes down the road, like the warlock or sorcerer. But its easier/faster to just build off the wizard chassis to test with, then it is to build whole new chassis for other classes yet.

And even if these ARE meant to be for the wizard class eventually... as Sammael said, perhaps its just meant to be a module for the wizard to avoid Vancian casting.

Let's now forget... their hope was to replicate or harken back to ALL editions... which would include the possibility of playing the classes like 4E. So having both Vancian and non-Vancian options for the wizard isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Wow dramatic much?

It's not dramatic at all. I don't want encounter powers attached onto the wizard either. I hated 4e encounter powers and the idea that they are going to stick them on the wizard is downright repulsive. If they want encounter powers, they need to stick them on a class that makes sense.

Worse is that he has a poor judgment on feather fall. I will point out that feather fall isn't exactly lower power in certain situations such as trying to figure out how to get to the bottom of a canyon quickly with no risk of dying. I can see major abuses if all he has to do is spend 5 minutes to get it back.

Well, I think it would be quite useful for a wizard to load up on the big spells in the morning and then refresh those empty slots with the more niche utility style spells later in the day.

There may even be less incentive for the wizard player to rest and reload if his spell slots fill up with lesser spells.

I personally wouldn't call getting a band of PCs to the bottom of a 1000 foot canyon a "major abuse". Seeing as how the monsters that inevitably will be found down there will kick the crap out of them. ;)
