So there is alot of debate over rolling ability scores in 5e or point buy. My qustion is how many people let the dice fall were they may. In my experance die rolling over and over again just became too much.

I will say I had a player who always had atleast 1 18 when we rolled, and as a player i have seen some WAY over powered ways to roll (4d6 re roll 1's and 2's drop lowest, roll 9 numbers take the 6 best and arrange).

Maybe my experances are way off but they always come down to one of two, excepted cheatiingg, and out right crazy rolling

Let the dice fall where they fall. Been doing that for 30 years. We tried other methods and didnt care for em.

Unimportant
Let the dice fall where they may with an arbitrary (and quite low) re-roll point such as at least a positive modifier total and at least one 14 or better score.

I find players tend to focus inordinately on the stats -- often the importance of a particular level gets overblown compared to careful play and in-game choices.

In one Ars Magica campaign, the players had started down this path so I instituted an over/under rule. Each player could pick the amount under average he'd be allowed to reroll, but if they exceeded that amount above average, he'd be forced to reroll. So a player could say "I want a character between -3/+3 of the average".

Hah! I guess I'm the only one that doesn't mind when my players cheat when rolling ability scores. I don't mind generally as long as if I see an 18 on that sheet then I better see an 8 on there too. Most of the time when people cheat on ability scores, they make a slightly positive or a well-rounded character anyway, to try and get away with the cheating. So cheating on ability scores generally doesn't affect the game much.

I'll admit to cheating some in my teenage 2e days, but I generally let the dice fall where they may these days. Some people cheat though because they want a decent character and have a particular character build in mind, and fair enough I say. Choose the stat array that works well for you, and we'll get to playing.

We "let the dice fall as they may, live with low or high scores" because "we have a crazy rolling method that always gets high stats" which is the 3rd edition standard 4d6-drop-lowest+rearrange (and reroll everything when too low, according to the PHB rules).
