Which Savage Worlds?

Lhorgrim

Explorer
So I'm intrigued by the Savage Worlds system, but I don't know whether to get the hardback Deluxe or the Explorer Deluxe rules.

I generally prefer full size rule books, but for the difference in price the hardback Deluxe rules would need to have something good to justify the extra cash. Does anyone have any insight into the extra value of the hardback rules? I know its hard to quantify, but I am always willing to spend extra for good artwork that fires my imagination. I also like rules examples that can help me teach the game to others.

Any input is appreciated!

I have the Explorers edition and had no problem understanding the rules. It seems well enough laid out and looks pretty. I haven't seen the hard-back edition so I can't comment on that, but the Explorer's edition is seems pretty good to me!

Both books contain the same information, and I believe most of the same art. The hardcover is just more protected and spacious. Also, it was a single print run, so it's limited, whereas the explorer's edition will keep being printed.

Okay - there is a little confusion here, I hope I can help with.

Savage worlds was released in the smaller soft-bound book some time ago and was called the Explorers Edition.

The rules then got some minor updates (some important, such as wounds and bleeding out) for a Delux version. This was initially released in larger hard back.

Since it has also been released in smaller soft back I believe. Thus the deluxe soft and hard back have the same rules/edition.

The confusion comes as I believe they call their smaller, soft back books Explorer formats. So the Deluxe now comes in Explorer format, just like the Explorer version that was the first Explorer format. I don't have the Delux as an Explorer size, but I do remember reading EVERYTHING from the hardback is in the soft cover - it has simply shrunken in size.

I have used the old Explorer rules in smaller soft format (like the Fantasy and Horror expansions) and have found them more than adequate. I prefer the larger hard back, BUT the small soft covers are well worht their price. We bought a heap for our group. Best bang for buck out there :)

Confused? In any case I recommend buying the Deluxe rules set, whether hard back or soft back (Explorer size/format). :D Hope that helps.

Thanks for the replies. I'm ordering the Explorer's edition today. Can't wait to get started. I've read the quick start rules and it seems like a really fun and fast game.

Thanks again. Amazon should have the Deluxe Explorer's edition at my door on Friday 04/19. I'm getting so many ideas for one shots and three or four session mini campaigns that I'm having to write stuff down on any piece of paper that happens to be handy so I don't forget them. My imagination is in overdrive! I just jotted down some notes for a scenario set during the early western expansion in colonial America. Sort of a Daniel Boone/Davy Crockett thing, but with the Native Americans able to use actual spirit magic.
