D&D 5E Alternatives to feats giving +1 ability bonuses

Simplest solution is just rolling 3d6 for your starting scores for gritty play. No need to remove bonuses from the game if you just start a lot less powerful. What's grittier... being a Fighter with a 17 STR that never improves... or a Fighter who starts his career with a 13 STR that slowly gets higher over time?

This is an option I'm really hoping is provided in the rules. I'd prefer if it were the default. Let 4d6 drop the lowest, array, and point buy be options.

Also, I hope this is the system where I can run the occasional campaign where characters roll 3d6 for each ability score in order. Just for the fun of trying to survive with whatever the dice give you.

I'd like this too especially if they keep the monster ACs as low as they are now and the monster hp low too. It fits that all aspects of the game, PCs and monsters work within the system of bounded accuracy.

Imagine a beginning PC with Average stats at about 11. Then add the race and class bonuses. This would be refreshing.
