I was so disappointed when I walked out of the theater on this one. I had high hopes, but I walked out thinking Ridely Scott was trying to do Kubrick.
I just rewatched it tonight, and maybe it's because I don't have the high expectations I had going in the first time--or maybe it's because I've had time to digest the film a bit and put a few answers to some of my questions--but I liked it a lot more than I did the first time.
I got a real Traveller vibe with it, especially those old adventures like Shadows and a few from Judges Guild.
And, I'm happy to hear its going to be the first of at least two films--maybe a trilogy--where we will get more answers later.
I still don't know why Charlize Theron's character was in the film. Yeah, I get the relationship she has with her pops mirrors that the human race has with the Engineers, but that whole story line really doesn't need to be in the film. At first, I thought that she might be one of the two survivors, and the next film would have good space girl and bad space girl having to depend on each other. But, Ms. Vickers died at the climax. I learned something about screenwriting and storytelling long ago that I think is pertinent here. If you take a character completely out of a screenplay, how does that change the story? If you take out Charlize's character, it doesn't change the story one bit. The only thing she really does is not let the infected Dr. Holloway back on the ship when he's infected, and that action could have easily been given to another character--anybody still on the ship.
Despite its flaws, I'm warming up to the film a bit, and I'm sure I'll be first in line to see the next one.
