Prometheus

I was so disappointed when I walked out of the theater on this one. I had high hopes, but I walked out thinking Ridely Scott was trying to do Kubrick.

I just rewatched it tonight, and maybe it's because I don't have the high expectations I had going in the first time--or maybe it's because I've had time to digest the film a bit and put a few answers to some of my questions--but I liked it a lot more than I did the first time.

I got a real Traveller vibe with it, especially those old adventures like Shadows and a few from Judges Guild.

And, I'm happy to hear its going to be the first of at least two films--maybe a trilogy--where we will get more answers later.

I still don't know why Charlize Theron's character was in the film. Yeah, I get the relationship she has with her pops mirrors that the human race has with the Engineers, but that whole story line really doesn't need to be in the film. At first, I thought that she might be one of the two survivors, and the next film would have good space girl and bad space girl having to depend on each other. But, Ms. Vickers died at the climax. I learned something about screenwriting and storytelling long ago that I think is pertinent here. If you take a character completely out of a screenplay, how does that change the story? If you take out Charlize's character, it doesn't change the story one bit. The only thing she really does is not let the infected Dr. Holloway back on the ship when he's infected, and that action could have easily been given to another character--anybody still on the ship.

Despite its flaws, I'm warming up to the film a bit, and I'm sure I'll be first in line to see the next one.

meh. I was not impressed with Prometheus. Didn't walk out. But it had too many bad choices by the characters. It might as well been set in a forest and an old rustic cabin with some teenagers out there for the weekend.

Why would the scientist who is scared of this place go into the scary room? Let alone mess with anything?

What is the probability that an alien ship is going to take off and crash down RIGHT on top of you?

Plus all the stuff you said.

The ship is rolling toward me...let's run away from the ship in the same direction its rolling!!

The movie was OK for me, but that part right there had me baffled. Why not just run in a different direction?

I don't mind people in movies panicking and doing stupid things. Besides, they did run sideways in the end - and it fell over sideways onto them!

How about "Oh, while you were giving yourself that ceasarian abortion, the android completely decoded the entire computer system"? Or the number of times supposed scientist break procedure/protocol? Or the fact that, yeah, these could have just been idiot teenagers in the woods. Instead of listing what was done incorrectly, let's list what was done right.

I got nothing.

And if you need the DVD extras to explain your movie, you and your movie have failed.

Prometheus was a disappointment. Looked beautiful, needed a few more passes on the script, I didn't mind the Ancient Aliens angle --why didn't they get that crazy-haired guy for a cameo?!??!-- but ended by setting up what could be a fantastic, if extremely difficult-to-actually-write sequel.

I kinda regret seeing it at home. I think on the big-screen a lot of my criticisms would have been subdued by pure visual splendor.

I'm still very disappointed in the movie. I've been antsy in my pantsy ever seen I saw that awesome teaser trailer that looked like the original trailer from Alien.

I've seen it three times now, once with the deleted scenes. While the deleted scenes do explain some of the odd behavior shown it doesn't do much to help the biggest problems of this film.

I can overlook a lot of poor choices characters make. They're in a stressful situation. Their whole universe is upside down after discovering other life which has seemingly been terminated violently. Sure, I'll accept that you spent a trillion dollars on a mission and the crew don't know each other, that's fine. Upon arriving at the moon, you just decide to land somewhere? That's cool man, who needs protocols, let's get the story going.
But then, there's no story. There are just things happening. It's like a Micheal Bay flick without the explosions. And because the makers refused to spend more time on developing the characters or their motivations, I don't really care about what happens to them.

Ridley Scott didn't want to make an Alien movie. He wanted to make an Ancient Astronaut movie, because he believes that stuff. But then he doesn't even do that. He gets Lindelof, the writer for Lost, to rewrite a fairly cool and intriguing Ancient Astronaut script. Which totally messes up the script. Nothing is explained now. Nothing. Because you get that in the second movie, allegedly. That's what you want in a movie. To have another movie explain wtf just happened.

I'm a frustrated with comments made by people who enjoyed the film who say things like: "You just don't get it" or even worse "What's with people who can't handle a little mystery in a movie and need everything explained to them?"

This movie isn't mysterious. It's just a bunch of random shi...stuff spliced and stitched together like some Frankenstein's monster. Except that the movie is a lot less intelligible or eloquent.
Mystery isn't always not explaining. The beginning of the movie was mysterious. How cool is it that they find all these related symbols across our history and just before moments of great technological or social progress. But then they took that and a bunch of other random things and were just like, throw it in a blender, slap some 3D on it and poof: Mystery!

You know what, I'm becoming a lot less intelligible or eloquent the further I go with this rant. I'll let a cute girl with pink hair explain what's what a lot better I. First three links are the three parts of her Prometheus special. The last one is a link to the original Prometheus script by Jon Spaihts.

I agree. Donnie Darko has mysterious elements that are not fully explained, but is an amazing movie. The mystery is presented in such a way that you have to decide and interpret for yourself. And watching it multiple times, I have come away with different ideas on what some of the story is about.
Because the writer did a good job. (understatement)
Prometheus's writer did a crappy, third-rate hack job. And Cameron should have rejected it, plain and simple. Instead, he gave in, and the result was... typical hollywood block-buster effluence.
