I think it's interesting that the trap creates an illusion of an ideal results for the Order. Belkar ends up dead (and is clearly affected by the trap in the last panel). I don't think their illusionary reality is consensus either... the Belkar's graveside panel- Elan and Haley are grieving (and Roy isn't). I don't think Roy (or Haley really) would be especially keen on Elan coming to terms with his brother and father or riding a dinosaur so it's probably not just taking the 'happy ending' from one mind.

Rich generally does pay subtle attention to the details\internal logic (and foreshadow, though sometimes not so subtly), so is the 'happy ending' a result of the spell deciding <this is the ideal end result> or that Belkar's (and Mr. Scruffy's) desired happy ending conflicted with the others? Or does Belkar have a pretty strong deathwish?

Now I'm really worried. Seeing all this in a magically induced wish-fulfillment dream sequence seems to make it pretty certain we'll never see any of this happen in real life. (Er... you know what I mean.)

I think we are only seeing Roys dream.

Agreed.
By giving us the big perfect happy ending as a dream it does kinda mean we won't get that ending, that how the story really ends will not be as happy. That things will not go this well.

Belkar has a huge guilt complex now, strange but true. He actually believes he should have died in the fight with Malack, not Durkon. . .so of course in the shared fantasy he dies, while Durkon lives. Belkar wants that, and everybody else seems quite capable of living with it.

Yeah, that makes the continued filler actually kinda cool. Knowing these fools will not be seeing the Happy Ending depicted in the illusion raises my hopes for the narrative.
