I did in 1998 for my own use. It was based on 2d6 and inspired by The Fabled Lands series of game books (which also use 2d6).

The maths was really solid but it lacked a lot of flavour. I shredded it and went back to D&D.

The first game I ever designed was a post-apoc/super hero cross. I don't even remember the system I was using, but I was shocked at just how often stuff came up I didn't have answers for.

Many years later I mostly focus designing on miniatures games, but a few years ago I did some basic work for another post-apoc/sci-fi game and whenever game design comes up my GF mentions how much she would like me to finish it.

Like it's that easy.

My own fantasty heartbreaker is in development (translation : I have lots of material but am lazy about finishing it). Its a mashup of B/X D&D, and a few ideas from GURPS and other oddball stuff thrown in. If it ever does get finished I will post it for download.

What the heck does "Fantasy Heartbreaker" mean anyway. It sounds like one of those memey namey things where some Forgies decided to make up terms to describe game systems, and D&D-like just wasn't sufficient.

Pat Benatar songs shouldn't be used to describe RPGs.

Could be a fantasy love taker. ;)

Firstly, it's definitely not an insult or other form of pejorative. (Unless, of course, I use it in the context of D&D Next... but I simply don;t comment on that any more because I cannot make a positive contribution.)

Secondly, I don't know where it originated.

Thirdly, it describes how many of us have attempted to design our own version of D&D with elaborate clones of the core books etc... and it often seems to just end in something resembling heartbreak.

You are so right. I think it's the situation where you make your own dnd clone, you and players say yeah it's cool but a month later you are back playing pure dnd.
I've been cloning dnd for past 10 years. Alteration after alteration, improvement after an improvement and only now I can say that I have created something that's not a clone and a heartbreak. This game we all love and we still haven't looked back.
